7th Grade ELA
In 7th grade ELA, students have been reading and evaluating argumentative writing. After reading an argumentative text, students evaluate the strength of the writer’s claim by identifying and evaluating the supporting evidence. The students determine if the writer uses any bias or emotional language, if the writer relies on facts rather than personal opinions, and if the writer addresses and refutes any opposing viewpoints. Students have also been learning about argumentative appeals—ethos, pathos, and logos—and determining which appeals, if any, the writer uses to convince his or her audience to adopt a particular viewpoint or take a specific action.

7th Grade Science
In Mrs. Lifsitz science class, we just received our trout eggs for trout in the classroom. We will be watching the trout grow and learning more about them as we embark on our population unit. Students completed some trout stations to learn some background on trout and the requirements our trout need to survive in nature and how we can meet those in our tank. Particularly, we focused on the nitrogen cycle and the importance of monitoring the nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels in our tank with testing each day in order to keep our trout healthy. Students have already been doing water tests and taking care of the trout in Skills class. The students counted 254 trout eggs. Most of our eggs have developed into fry with yolk sacs--soon we will be able to take the coverings off the tank and see the trout every day!

7th Grade Math
Throughout the month of February, students in Mrs. Besecker’s classes will start working through our new unit - Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships. This unit starts by centering on ratios, rates and unit rates. Students will next use equivalent ratios to decide whether quantities are in a proportional relationship. They will then be introduced to the constant of proportionality and be able to use it in an equation to represent a proportional relationship.

7th Grade Social Studies
In Social Studies we welcome back Mr. Smacher to our classroom. Mr. Smacher is a student-teacher from Penn State and will be with us through the beginning of May. Please Mr. Smacher’s welcome letter below:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Gracen Smacher, and I will be student teaching in your child’s social studies class with Jonathan Clark. After student teaching, I will graduate from Penn State University with a degree in History and Secondary Education, specializing in social sciences. I will also graduate with an Art History minor, which is a passion of mine.
I was born and raised in the Harrisburg area in a small town known as Dillsburg. However, I have lived in State College for the past five years with my tortoise, Kirby, and my uromastyx, Spike. In my spare time, I enjoy fishing, playing soccer, and completing puzzles. I am also really into sports, specifically hockey and football (Go Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers!).
Hopefully, this spring will be an explosion of learning for both the students and myself! I am excited to be teaching your child and growing my experience within education. I cannot wait to become part of your child’s educational process as well as this community! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email (gsmacher@basd.net).
I am looking forward to a great semester!
Gracen Smacher
