Mrs. Markert
7th Grade ELA
During the first part of October, we read an excerpt from the short story, The Three Questions, by Leo Tolstoy. With this text, we discussed the different types of conflicts and analyzed how the conflicts advanced the plot. In addition, we analyzed how the characters’ actions revealed their points-of-view. Around mid-October, we read an excerpt from a nonfiction text about the morality of keeping animals in captivity. We practiced making inferences and supporting those inferences with evidence from the text, along with understanding how the structure of a text may reveal the author’s purpose and point of view.

7th Grade Science
In Mrs. Ziccardi’s classes, we have been learning about how the human body systems work together to get cells the molecules they need for energy and growth. While our last unit focused on size and scale, this unit has a focus on models. To understand how molecules move through the body, students have used a computer model, drawn models and they themselves were part of a physical model where they worked as a class to get the cells what they needed. Currently, we are focusing on how cells convert energy into a form our body can use to figure out why a girl Elisa has been so sick and tired for months- the second half of this unit will focus on growth through the lens of chicken eggs growing and (hopefully) hatching. Our incubator has been having some issues, so the chicks may have to be delayed slightly compared to the other teams’ science class, but we won’t give up and will give raising chicks a try as soon as we can!
7th Grade Math
Students in Mrs. Besecker’s classes continued to work with integers and rational numbers (fractions and decimals). The students have shown a lot of tenacity as they have been working through these more challenging skills! Throughout this unit, students have also been learning the Rules for Integers. The main focus for the second half of this unit has been multiplying & dividing. We spent the entire month of October working through the final lessons for Unit 1. Towards the end of this unit, students solved more complex problems incorporating all of the math skills from Unit 1. We will complete a mini-unit on Order of Operations in early November before starting Unit 4, Generate Equivalent Expressions.
7th Grade Social Studies
In Social Studies, we've been exploring the history of Ancient Greece and Rome. While studying Ancient Greece, students have reflected on ideas and values that continue to shape our world today, such as the belief in self-governance, which laid the foundation for democracy. As we move on to Ancient Rome, students will delve into significant contributions in law, language, architecture, and culture. To help them engage with these topics, students have been diving into various readings, DBQs (Document-Based Questions), and mapping activities to deepen their understanding of these civilizations. As we near the end of the first marking period, I want to thank everyone for their hard work and remind you that daily classwork and homework are posted on my webpage. If there are any updates during the week, I will make sure to keep the page current. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. Also, keep an eye out for information about Parent/Teacher conferences in November. Please contact one of the core teachers to set up a meeting.
