Using survey 123, I created a survey that asked educators about their experience using technology, especially GIS technology in the classroom. The survey also asked if the educators would be interested in learning this technology and in what ways would they most like to learn about it. The survey questions changed depending on the takers responses as to not overwhelm a person who has never heard of the technology with questions about how they have used the technology. The survey was disseminated through social media.
The majority of the people who participated taught in a Jr High/ High School setting, with the majority being Social Studies (35%) and STEM (45%) teachers.
While the majority of educators who responded to the survey have heard of GIS (70%). Only 30% had used it in their classroom, and for many that was just using Google Maps. The number one reason for educators not using it was time.
When asked if they would be interested in training to use this technology 70% responded yes and 25% responded maybe. When asked what would be their ideal type of training or resources a tool kit is what 85% of responders would like to see and 60% would like in-person training.
Things to consider about the data: Responses were limited. The majority of responders who had not heard of GIS or used it were in Maine. The majority of people this was put out to were from Maine while the people for out of state who use GIS may already be part of the GIS educator community.
