This slideshow introduces the task and includes some student discussion about artworks by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.

Key Vocabulary:

Colour: An Art Element. How our eyes perceive light. Said by many to be said one of the most expressive Art Elements

Contrasting Colours: Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel- e.g. blue and orange. Also known as complementary colours.

Cool Colours: Blue, green and purple are cool colours.

Harmonious Colours: Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel- e.g. blue and green. Also known as analogous colours.

Hue: Colours in their natural form (as they appear on the colour wheel)

Neutral Colours: Colours that don't appear on the colour wheel- e.g. grey, brown

Primary Colours: Blue, yellow and red. All colours can be made with these three colours.

Secondary Colours: Green, orange and purple. The primary colours can be mixed to make these colours.

Shade: A colour mixed with black

Tint: A colour mixed with white

Tone: An Art Element. Tone refers to degrees of lightness and darkness of a colour or a shade. Also referred to as value

Warm Colours: Orange, yellow and red are warm colours.
