Milledgeville, GA - Baldwin County Schools proudly celebrated the past and present of Baldwin athletics last month with the unveiling of three championship banners inside James Lunsford Gymnasium, honoring historic achievement and continued excellence on the basketball court.
The centerpiece of the evening was the unveiling of the 1977 Baldwin Bravettes Basketball Team banner, commemorating the team’s historic accomplishment as the first 4A AAA Region Champions. The 1977 Bravettes played a pivotal role in shaping the future of girls’ athletics in Baldwin County, setting a standard of excellence that continues to influence generations of student-athletes.
Coached by Joe Cunningham and Frank Davison, the 1977 Bravettes were trailblazers whose success came during a formative era for girls’ high school sports. Their dedication, teamwork, and competitive spirit helped establish a foundation upon which today’s programs continue to build.
Members of the 1977 Baldwin Bravettes Basketball Team include:
Jacqueline Arnold Caruthers; Janice Arnold Cleveland; Wanda Butts; Brenda Hawkins Green; Sandra Reeves Greene; Linda Lattimore Holland; Tina Hill Huff; Regina Mullins Kerbo (Trainer); Susie Harper Marshall; Lori Payne; Sandra Rovelli; Gracie Simmons; Rosemary Harper Smith; and Audrey Bridges Stanton.
In addition to honoring the 1977 Bravettes, Baldwin County Schools also unveiled two additional banners celebrating recent athletic achievements:
2025 GHSA AAA Girls State Runner-Up
2024 GHSA Boys Final Four
Together, the banners reflect the continuity of excellence within Baldwin basketball, linking the achievements of past pioneers with the success of today’s student-athletes.
“These banners don't just represent wins and championships,” said District Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks, “They tell the story of perseverance, opportunity, and pride that defines Baldwin athletics. Our students compete today because others paved the way.”
The banners now hang permanently in James Lunsford Gymnasium, serving as a visible reminder of Baldwin’s proud athletic history and its ongoing commitment to excellence both on and off the court.
