The RIDE SAFELY checklist is not a one-and-done deal. Throughout the trip, repeat the cycle at every juncture your group planned and anytime conditions or terrain significantly change. The TEAMWORK rules of engagement ensure everyone is a part of choosing where your group goes. Travel together, decide together. Listen to every voice. Challenge assumptions. Respect any veto.
Each cycle will look a little different each time. Groups might assess cornice formation and add a layer of clothing before gaining a windy ridge. Groups might establish a plan for spacing out and grab some water before crossing the runout of an avalanche path. Groups might discuss snowpack and weather observations at a designated juncture, over a snack, or when conditions warrant. Repeatedly taking stock of conditions, terrain, and teamwork throughout the trip has many forms and functions, but above all, it helps us to manage risk effectively.
