Ionic and Covalent Compounds
The Periodic Table is a table of elements. The elements are separated by metals and non metals. In between there is a stair case of semi metals. The first group are called Alkali Metals and have one valence electron. The second group is called Alkaline earth Metals and have 2 valence electrons. Group 3 through 12 are called Transition metals. Group 17 are called Halogens which have 7 valence electrons. Group 18 are called noble gases and they have 8 valence electrons.
Ionic Bonds are between a non metal and a metal. A Covalent bond is a bond between non metals.
Ionic Bonds Covalent bonds
- LiF - Lithium Fluoride H2O- Dihydrogen Monoxide
- LiCl - Lithium Chloride CO2- Carbon Monoxide
- LiBr - Lithium Bromide OF2- Oxygen Difluoride
Ionic Compound
- High Melting and boiling point
- very strong
- lots of energy needed to break them
Covalent Compounds
- low melting and boiling point
- lower enthalpies of fusion and vaporization than ionic compounds.
- More flammable
Water is a covalent compound. It is a covalent compound because it has one non metal and metal elements attracting. I use water in my everyday life, i use it to take a shower, to make my food, and to drink. Without water all the plants would die from hydration. Without plants animals would die and without animals Humans would die. Also we are made up of water, so we would die without water anyways. I use water to boil my noodles cause I have to stay after school and like i get hungry.
Sodium Chloride is a ionic bond because it consists of a non metal and metal. I use sodium chloride in all my food. I usually put a lot in my fries. Our bodies need Sodium chloride, we need it to live. If you eat too much salt then you can cause high blood pressure which can lead to straining your heart.
Ions are Atoms with charges. Anions is negative . CAtions are positive. Binary compounds are a substance composed of exactly two different elements, which are substances that cannot be simplified further by chemical means.
Examples: H2O, H2S, NH3, Ca, Cl
