At AMA, we work together to support and encourage each other. We appreciate differences and understand that not everyone learns and grows at the same pace. We know that everyone has something valuable to contribute. We know that we make mistakes, some big, some small. Most importantly, we know that we are disciples of Jesus and as such, we are to do our best to follow in His footsteps.
In our classroom, I encourage students to take educational risks. Raise your hand and try to answer even if you're not sure you're correct. Think for yourself. Be okay with saying things like, "I'm not sure." "I could use some help with this." or "Please, give me a minute, I need a little think time to work this out." I also encourage my students to work through productive struggles to reach their goals. Remember, with God, all things are possible. He never said they would all be easy.
It is essential for learning that everyone feels safe to: be him/herself, be unique and not follow the crowd, make mistakes, try difficult things or things that make us nervous, be proud of our successes, own up to our mistakes, be forgiven when we try to make it right, and be loved and supported.
This is the atmosphere I, as the teacher, do my best to set the tone for. I encourage students to live up to this standard. There are consequences for our actions, both positive and negative. The ultimate goal is to create a safe and positive learning environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow.
Sincerely,
Miss Zappel
