Course name: Grade 5 Math
Instructor: Miss Zappel
Contact information: mzappel@avemariapgh.org
Text Books: Sadlier Math, Sadlier School (2019)
Course Overview:
Topics of study include but are not limited to:
Place value through the billions
problem solving
mathematical expressions
operations with fractions
operations with decimals
order of operations
strategies for estimation
decimals
measurement
data
basic geometry
Mathematics relies heavily on mastery of prior skills and understanding of numbers, number systems, and number sense. Prior skills will be revisited as needed.
Math Homework:
Please encourage your children to try their homework independently and use the resources in their notebooks or Google classrooms. It is ok for them to have a bit of productive struggle as they work their way through. On many occasions, it may be challenging in the beginning, but they feel a sense of accomplishment and get a self-esteem boost when they work through it and figure it out. If they are having a lot of trouble with their homework, and you need to provide considerable support, please let me know. You can just write a note at the top of the page or shoot me an email.
Students can earn points for homework by completing it neatly, following directions, and putting in effort. I do not grade homework for correctness as I see it as formative assessment and practice of newly learned skills.
In class, students will be shown the answers to the homework and correct it themselves while I walk around, check in with them, and monitor their progress. They will then have the opportunity to ask me to go over any question they missed and don’t understand why. Please reinforce with your child the importance of asking questions.
Assessment Corrections Opportunity
Learning from mistakes is a valuable skill which is why I encourage students to fix all their math assessments to earn additional credit. This develops study skills, analytical thinking, and assists students who possibly don’t do their best work during assessments.
During the process, students are encouraged to look back on their notes, homework, and posts in Google classroom as well as their textbooks. They are also encouraged to seek other resources such as videos (with parents' permission and supervision) to review/reinforce the skill, assistance from their peers, or asking me for help.
The procedure for correcting work is as follows:
How to Fix a Math Assessment for Extra Points
You can take advantage of this opportunity for any math assessment. All directions must be followed in order to earn credit.
You have four school days (unless otherwise stated) from the day the test is returned to you to turn in your work. It will not be accepted after that time.
~Example of how to do these corrections is posted in your children's Google Classroom
A Common Question Answered: How do I support my child’s math studies?
Encourage your child to:
always do his/her neatest and best work. It is not unusual for a student to get a problem incorrect because he/she (or I) couldn’t read the writing or keep track of the work.
Hint: If your child struggles with lining up their math work, (s)he can use graph paper and write in the squares or turn his/her paper so the lines are vertical and use the columns to align numbers.
carefully read and follow all directions
take quality notes given in class
ask questions
in class
of his/her peers
email the teacher
give the teacher note w/a question
write down homework in his/her school planner when it is given
come prepared to class with all supplies
focus and actively participate in class
use all resources available
resources papers
Google Classroom
class notes
highlighters to emphasize important aspects of a problem (ex: Many students will highlight the operation sign or the negatives in front of numbers.)
items in their on-line textbook (if available)
videos on the Internet.
Parents are strongly encouraged to search for videos with your child or preview videos prior to having your child use them.
Please practice previously learned skills such as:
basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using flashcards or other resources. It is a significant hindrance to progression in math if a student doesn’t know his/her facts with instant recall.
operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with:
fractions
larger whole numbers
decimals
factors of numbers
ex: 7 and 43 are factors of 301 because 7 x 43 = 301
multiples of numbers
ex: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45…are factors of 9 because 9x1=9, 2x9=18, 3x9=27…
divisibility rules
You can find many resources simply by searching the Internet for topics your child is studying. There are many quality videos available created by teachers for students. (Of course, it is alway important to preview those videos.) Any video by Khan Academy is generally well done.
WORK ON IXL AT LEAST FOUR TIMES A WEEK. It doesn’t have to be a long time. Just 15 minutes a day can make a difference. The link is in Google Classroom.
