Lower School

The learning-by-doing environment is intentionally differentiated and flexible in order to accommodate the needs and interests of each artist/engineer, but it is important to us that each child develop core skills and proficiencies in certain areas to leverage their ability to problem-solve creatively.

Activities you will find in D-Lab Jr:

  • thinking computationally with Dash and Dot robots and unplugged coding games

  • designing circuits with Snap Circuits, Makey Makey microcontrollers, circuit cards, squishy circuits, and craft motors

  • programming interactive screen experiences with Tynker, Scratch, Python, Swift Playground, etc...

  • building and programming robots with Lego WeDo 2.0 and SPIKE Prime

  • engineering moving contraptions with K'NEX, Lego Technics

  • modeling 3D designs with Tinkercad (manually or using CodeBlocks) and visualizing models in virtual reality with Merge Cubes

  • 3D printing models created in Tinkercad

  • prototyping an array of engineering the lifesized Rigamajig and table top Imagination Playground building sets and blocks

  • producing stop motion or live action videos (with green screen, too)

  • editing videos in iMovie

  • composing original soundtracks and recording sound effects

  • sewing and weaving by hand or machine

  • woodworking with light tools

  • creating digital art with iPads, Mac Desktops running Photoshop, Sketchup...
