Inoculating From a Broth

To inoculate from a broth, do the following:

1. Follow steps 1-13 on the Aseptic Transfers page.

2. Insert your inoculating tool into the tube of broth. Swirl.

3. Remove your tool from the culture tube.

4. Flame the lip of the tube and replace the cap.

5. Follow the steps listed on the appropriate page from the links below.

Inoculating to a Broth

To inoculate a broth, do the following:

1. Remove the cap of your tube and flame the lip.

2. Insert your inoculating tool into the tube, ensuring the portion with the inoculum is below the surface of the liquid. Swirl. [NOTE: Do not swirl if inoculating Thioglycollate broth.]

3. Remove your tool from the tube. Flame the lip and replace the cap.

4. Flame your tool.
