Is General Studies AA the right major for me?

The general studies in liberal arts associate degree consists of 42 hours of core curriculum plus 18 additional elective hours of transferrable coursework. It is particularly well-suited for students who are undecided about their career goals or who want to explore a variety of subjects before choosing a major. Click here to see the published degree plan or click here to view the program map which includes additional career and transfer information.

Once students have identified a discipline-specific major, they may decide to change majors and follow this new degree plan. We recommend this for students who don't have any plans beyond ACC and would benefit most from earning a degree in a focused subject of study. Students intending to transfer and pursue a bachelor's degree might decide to remain on the general studies plan, especially if courses they need for transfer aren't included on the ACC degree plan for their newly chosen major. This allows them to earn an associate degree using previously-earned credits and courses recommended by the intended transfer institution.

A Faculty Advisor can help you determine which ACC degree plan is best-suited for your academic goals.

Can a Faculty Advisor help me with my transfer plans?

Absolutely. Faculty Advisors can help you identify what you're looking for in a transfer institution and help you evaluate your transfer options based on these criteria. Once you've selected schools to apply to, Faculty Advisors can recommend ACC courses suitable for transfer. Finally, in conjunction with ACC's Transfer Services, Faculty Advisors can help answer the "when, where, and how" questions you might have about the transfer application process.

Can a Faculty Advisor help me connect with support services at ACC?

Yes. Because they are well-connected in their disciplines and well-versed on student support services across the college, faculty advisors can connect students with the services and resources they need to be successful at ACC.
