About The Sons of El Rey: The Sons of El Rey follows Ernesto Vega, a famed luchador known as El Rey Coyote, whose rise to stardom in Mexico nearly cost him his marriage. Now in East Los Angeles, Ernesto’s son, Freddy, struggles to keep his father’s gym alive, while Freddy’s son, Julian, seeks fulfillment as a Mexican American gay man defying cultural stereotypes. Spanning generations, from the ranches of Michoacán to modern-day West Hollywood, this novel offers an intimate look at a family grappling with identity, legacy, and the passage of time, while always fighting for what matters most.

Winning a landmark case in 1954 which made it possible for people of color to finally have their equal place on juries, Gus’ success as the first Latino to argue a case in the Supreme Court, came at a high cost when he died homeless on a park bench in 1964, burying his monumental contribution to US Civil Rights history with him.
