Incompletes
Faculty may give students the opportunity to take a grade of Incomplete (I) for their Spring 2020 or Summer 2020 courses. Students who receive the incomplete will have until the last date of withdrawal for the Fall 2020 semester to fulfill the requirements of the Incomplete.
The decision to award the Incomplete lies with the faculty. Students must request the Incomplete from each professor in each class, or the professor may suggest to the student that an Incomplete is an option they should consider. Faculty members are asked to use good judgment and be responsive to the student who may benefit from an Incomplete. In many circumstances, it will be preferable for the student to work through the Incomplete instead of having to retake a course with a W. To reduce the burden of documentation, the Admissions and Records division has created a fillable and printable PDF form for the Report of Incomplete Grade contract, and the link to this form will be sent to each dean and department chair. As a general rule, students must have been in good academic standing in the course prior to the move to online teaching and learning in order to be eligible for an Incomplete.
ACC’s Covid-19 Response states that students who, with faculty approval, take an Incomplete grade but choose not to complete the course may choose instead to convert the I to a W. This must be done in partnership with the faculty member, who submits a Grade Change Request form to Admissions and Records to change the grade and retroactively withdraw the student from the course. The W must be coded as a Withdrawal for Reasons of Covid-19. This will ensure that the student is not penalized by Financial Aid rules and that the withdrawal will not count in the student’s six-withdrawal limit.
When an Incomplete grade is changed to a Withdrawal for reasons of Covid-19, the student may retake that course in Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 at no additional cost to the student. The process for applying this tuition waiver is still under development.
