Teachers holding a preliminary teaching credential (General Education and Education Specialists) and are employed full-time as a teacher of record in Alhambra Unified School District.
Enrollment in the Alhambra Induction Program is FREE. Candidates who choose to participate in a program at another institute of learning are personally responsible for those costs.
Yes, because California has a two-tier credential structure. A preliminary credential is the first document issued after an individual meets basic credential requirements. (The preliminary credential is issued for a maximum of five years.) A clear credential is issued when all credential requirements have been completed. Candidates are invited to participate in the FREE Alhambra Unified Induction Program. If a candidate chooses to go elsewhere they must:
Complete the Request to Decline form
Collect and attach necessary paperwork/evidence
Schedule a meeting with the Director of Human Resources
If requirements for the clear credential are NOT completed before the expiration of the preliminary, the holder will be unable to teach in California's public schools with that credential until those requirements are met and the document is renewed (per Commission on Teaching Credential).
As a new hire, you are asked, by the Human Resources Credential Analyst, to complete the 'New Teacher Survey'. This information is collected and reviewed by the Induction Leadership Team (ILT), in collaboration with the Human Resources Credential Analyst, to identify the new AUSD teachers needing to complete a commission-approved Induction Program.
Once candidates, who are eligible for the Induction Program, have been identified a member of the ILT will be assigned as your Induction Mentor. The mentor will then schedule an Enrollment Meeting with you. That meeting must take place within 30 days of your hiring.
An Enrollment Meeting takes place within the first 30 days of your hiring, between you and your Induction Mentor. This is a time to (1) review the candidate's credential(s), (2) gather and analyze data from the candidate's completion of the preliminary preparation program, and (3) inform the candidate of the requirements of the AUSD Induction Program. A candidate wishing to enroll is asked to sign an Enrollment and Memorandum of Understanding form.
The process outlined above will take place for any 'late hire' eligible candidate. Options for enrollment will be provided to the eligible candidate and enrollment will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Regardless of the determination of enrollment in the Induction Program, support will be provided to the newly hired teacher by the Induction Leadership Team for the remainder of the school year, in which they were hired.
The Induction Program can successfully support teachers working to clear additional credentials. Candidates will work in collaboration with their Induction Mentor and administrator to outline a plan using the Clearing Additional Credentials Form.
Yes. Elementary and secondary public school teachers must be certified by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing in order to be employed in a California public school. Once an individual completes all Credential Requirements for certification in California, they may apply for and receive a California teaching credential. Please note you may be considered for the Early Completion Option. Click here for more information.
Who will be evaluating me this year?
Your site administrator is responsible for evaluating you. At the beginning of the year, you will be notified by your site about who and when you will be evaluated. Per the Candidate Enrollment and Memorandum of Understanding, completing the AUSD Induction Program requirements do not imply or ensure continued employment, as licensure requirements and employment criteria may differ.
How many times will I be observed?
You will be observed formally, by your site, a minimum of two times. You will be observed by your Induction Mentor four to six times, depending on your goals and needs. Observation scripts may be used as evidence in your Inquiry Cycle reflections and/or to show growth and competency during your Exit Interview. (Please see Program Components page for more information.) Additionally they may support administrator communication throughout the year.
Do I have to do a portfolio?
No. A portfolio is not a component of the AUSD Induction Program. However, you will be asked to participate in an Exit Interview and do written reflections throughout the year. (See the Induction Guidelines document for the full overview of the program's requirements.) The Exit Interview is an opportunity to dialogue and share your experiences and growth over the course of the year. It's also a chance to practice speaking about your teaching philosophy and personal goals.
AUSD has a partnership with the University of Massachusetts Global. Credit options are available and can be found here. PT indicates participating teacher. SE refers to Special Education.
Talk with the Credential Analyst at the District Office (see Contact Us page) for support in getting an extension from the state on your Preliminary Credential. As long as you are still participating in the Induction Program, the request should be granted. It is your responsibility to follow up with the CTC.
What happens if the AUSD Induction Program closes?
In the event the program closes each enrolled candidate will have the opportunity to complete the requirements for the year in which they are enrolled. The candidate will receive an individualized Teach-Out Plan. This is a progress profile that indicates the components of the program the candidate has completed, as well as directions for continued access to their online documents and resources.
NOTE:
A teacher identified after the first Induction Seminar of the school year may participate in an Advise and Assist meeting and receive monthly informal support from an Induction Mentor for the remainder of the school year. If the teacher returns to AUSD the following year, he/she may enroll and participate in the full AUSD Induction Program. Given any extenuating circumstances, the ILT will consider placement/enrollment on a case-by-case basis.
Teachers with previous teaching experience may apply for the Early Completion Option.
In the event the program closes, each enrolled candidate will have the opportunity to complete the requirements for which he/she is enrolled. The candidate will receive a progress profile, which indicates candidate progress and completion of the year’s requirements, as well as access to all his/her online documents
