Enrollment

NOTE:  Meetings and seminars will take place virtually or in person.

The AUSD Induction Program is a free two-year, individualized, job-embedded system of mentoring, support, and professional learning that begins in the teacher’s first year of teaching. The Induction Leadership Team (ILT) is a group of instructional specialists who, through a distributive leadership model, coordinate the AUSD Induction Program and serve as Induction Mentors. The ILT works with the credential analyst in Human Resources to identify new AUSD teachers with preliminary credentials. Teachers with preliminary credentials are then placed on the current Induction Candidate list, matched with an Induction Mentor, and invited to participate in an Enrollment meeting to review their credential(s), discuss Induction requirements, and complete enrollment paperwork.

Enrollment Assurance Policy

Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) assures that when a candidate has enrolled in the Induction Program the candidate is assigned an Induction Mentor within 30 days of their enrollment.  Each match is based on credentials held and grade level and/or subject area experience.  Together the candidate and mentor will develop and maintain an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP).  Goals for each candidate will be developed within the context of the ILP (within the first 60 days of the teacher's enrollment in the program) and with consultation from the site administration.  The ILP Roadmap will show the candidate's progress over the course of the year and time in the program.  The enrolled candidate will remain in the program until the candidate has completed program requirements, withdraws from the program, is exited from the program based on established criteria, or is admitted to another program to complete program requirements, with minimal disruption, for authorization.

FAQs about Enrollment

Who is eligible?

Teachers holding a preliminary teaching credential (General Education and Education Specialists) and are employed full-time as a teacher of record in Alhambra Unified School District.

How much does it cost?

Enrollment in the Alhambra Induction Program is FREE.  Candidates who choose to participate in a program at another institute of learning are personally responsible for those costs.

Is Induction necessary?  Do I have to sign up?  Why?

Yes, because California has a two-tier credential structure.  A preliminary credential is the first document and it's issued after an individual meets basic credential requirements.  (The preliminary credential is issued for a maximum of five years.)  A clear credential is the second document and is issued when all credential requirements have been completed.  Candidates are invited to participate in the FREE Alhambra Unified Induction Program to receive individualized support from district colleagues.  If a candidate chooses to go elsewhere they must:

If requirements for the clear credential are not completed before the expiration of the preliminary credential, the holder will be unable to teach in California's public schools (per Commission on Teaching Credential).

How do I enroll in Induction?

As new hires, they will be asked, by the Human Resources Credential Analyst, to complete the 'New Teacher Survey'.  This information is collected and reviewed by the Induction Leadership Team (ILT), in collaboration with the Human Resources Credential Analyst, to identify the new AUSD teachers in need of participating in a commission-approved Induction Program.  Once identified, a member of the ILT will be assigned as the teacher's Induction Mentor.  A match is based on credentials held and grade level and/or subject area experience.  The mentor will then schedule an Enrollment Meeting with the potential Induction Candidate, within 30 days of hiring.

What is an "Enrollment Meeting"?

An Enrollment Meeting is scheduled within the first 30 days of hire.  The purpose of this meeting is to (1) review the candidate's credential(s), (2) gather and analyze data from the candidate's completion of the preliminary preparation program, and (3) inform the candidate of the requirements of the AUSD Induction Program.  A candidate wishing to enroll is asked to sign an Enrollment and Memorandum of Understanding form.

What if I was hired late in the year?   Is there a cut-off date to enroll in the Induction Program?

The process outlined above will take place for any 'late hire' eligible candidate.   Options for enrollment will be provided to the eligible candidate and enrollment will be decided on a case-by-case basis.  Regardless of the determination of enrollment in the Induction Program, support will be provided to the newly hired teacher by the Induction Leadership Team for the remainder of the school year, in which they were hired.

What if I have more than one credential I need to clear?

The Induction Program can successfully support teachers working to clear additional credentials.  Candidates will work in collaboration with their Induction Mentor and administrator to outline a plan using the Clearing Additional Credentials Form

What if I have a credential from another state, do I still need to participate in Induction?

Yes.  Elementary and secondary public school teachers must be certified by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing in order to be employed in a California public school.  Once an individual completes all Credential Requirements for certification in California, he or she may apply for and receive a California teaching credential.

Please note,  it is not recommended that these candidates apply for the Early Completion Option.

What is ECO?

Senate Bill 57 was designed to allow eligible individuals to complete the Induction Program at a faster pace than the full two years generally required to complete all requirements.  Early Completion Option (ECO) participants have the opportunity to complete the Induction Program in one year.  This option is available to exceptional candidates who meet the eligibility criteria listed below and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies required of all participating teachers who complete the full-length program.  All candidates are notified of the ECO option at the time of enrollment in the program.  ECO is equally rigorous as the full-length program, although shorter in length.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for early completion, participating teachers must:

Application Process

Please note:  If a participating teacher is not successfully progressing on pace for early completion of the program or if the teacher fails to demonstrate skills and abilities on a level expected of and consistent with an early completion candidate, adjustments will be made as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Program Director.  ECO status is provisional and can be revoked at any time.

Completion of Early Completion Option

In order for the Induction Program to verify completion for participating teachers enrolled in the ECO, the participating teacher must have demonstrated that they have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies required of all teacher candidates who complete the full-length program and that are required for the Clear Credential.  Only those teachers who have participated in and successfully completed all ECO program requirements will be recommended for a Clear Credential.
