Orchestra and band are yearlong courses—you are making a commitment to stay in this class for the entire school year. It takes dedication and consistent practice to become the best musician you can be. The great news is that it will be rewarding, exciting, satisfying and fun!
Concert Band (Beginner and Intermediate levels)
This course is open to all students who want to start playing wind or percussion instruments. No prior musical experience is required. Students will learn the fundamentals of playing a musical instrument, including correct posture and position, development of characteristic tone quality and technique, and music theory.
Instruments available include flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, F horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Students interested in playing percussion must audition during the first month of school.
Advanced Band
This course is open to students with at least one year of experience playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students continuing from Concert Band will need to demonstrate “novice” level skills as described in the Colorado Music Content Standards. Students will deepen their technical development and music literacy with an increased focus on intonation, balance and blend while working together to perform challenging and satisfying repertoire.
In addition to Concert Band instruments, piccolo, oboe and bassoon are also available.
String Orchestra (Beginner and Intermediate levels)
This course is open to all students who want to start playing a bowed string instrument. No prior musical experience is required. Students will learn the fundamentals of playing a musical instrument, including correct posture and position, development of characteristic tone quality and technique, and music theory.
Instruments available include violin, viola, cello and upright bass.
Advanced Orchestra
This course is open to students with at least one year of experience playing a bowed string instrument. Students continuing from String Orchestra will need to demonstrate “novice” level skills as described in the Colorado Music Content Standards. Students will deepen their technical development and music literacy with an increased focus on intonation, balance and blend while working together to perform challenging and satisfying repertoire.
