What early number concepts will your child explore in Kindergarten?
Early Counting and Number Concepts:
Number Sequence:
The names and the ordered list of number words (Math is a language of words and symbols)
One to One Correspondence:
Counting objects by saying number words in a one-to-one correspondence with the objects
Cardinality:
Counting tells us how many things are in a set. How many do you have?
Subitizing:
Quickly recognizing and naming how many objects are in a small group without counting.
Young children should be able to recognize and name quantities of objects that are less than
four without counting.
Part-Part-Whole:
Numbers are related to each other through a variety of number relationships, they can be decomposed or broken apart, they are made up of a combination of smaller quantities
Structure to 5:
Knowing all of the ways to make 5 are really important since we build off of this to make 10. Our number system is based on 5 and 10 so this is an important structure to have to access many strategies and build number sense. We work with dots in a five frame, bead racks, and our fingers to build this concept.
