Concussions

If you suspect that your student has a concussion, s/he should be evaluated as soon as possible by a physician with experience in concussion evaluation and treatment. Please see the Acalanes Student Concussion Management Plan and have the physician fill out page 4 of the Acalanes Concussion Packet  and return to School Nurse Dvora Citron ASAP. All Acalanes students with a suspected concussion should report this immediately to their counselor, Athletic Trainer, Athletic Director, coach, teacher or School Nurse.  You can find contact information for Acalanes staff HERE.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused when the force from a blow to the head, sudden deceleration, or other impact to the body travels to the head. When the force of the impact causes the brain to move around inside the skull, a concussion may occur.  The brain accelerates and strikes the skull wall. The nerve endings and blood vessels are stretched and torn as the brain rotates and rebounds.  Click HERE.  Watch THIS video.

Concussions in High School Students

Concussion is a significant medical problem occurring in our student population that has been increasing in both incidence and severity over the last several years.  Because of the nature of this brain injury and its consequences, concussion presents many unique challenges. The goal of the Acalanes Student Concussion Management Plan is to both support students’ concussion recovery while also supporting their academic progress in classes*.   The purpose of this framework is for students, school staff, parents and medical providers to use the resources provided in this site to collaborate together to achieve both goals - concussion recovery and academic progress. The main strategy for immediate concussion recovery is REST*– both physical, cognitive and emotional.

Please see the Acalanes Student Concussion Management Plan.

Medical documentation is required to return to school following a suspected/actual concussion.

Please see the Concussion Forms and Resources  for required forms and important resources.
