Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment refers to high school coursework allowing students to earn both a high school and college credit. Students receive instruction at the high school from a high school teacher.

Dual enrollment is available to juniors and seniors. In certain circumstances, sophomores may be given permission to take these classes.

Dual Enrollment Steps

A dual enrollment course provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit. Most dual enrollment courses here at Fort Defiance are offered in concert with Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC). Traditionally, the community college pays for 80% of the course tuition while the student is responsible for the remaining 20%. Students may also take dual enrollment courses through the Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School and the Valley Career and Technical Center.  In 2023-2024, students in Augusta County pay approximately $38.50 per credit for a dual enrollment course. Rates for 2024-2025 will be determined at a later date.

There are four steps to enroll in a dual enrollment course.

Online Application, Placement Testing (if necessary), Parental Permission, & Class Fee

1.   Apply online at https://www.brcc.edu or https://apply.vccs.edu. Parents should assist their student in completing all sections of the application. If you have taken a dual enrollment class before and already have a VCCS student ID number, you do not need to apply again. If you have participated in a Learning is Fun program through BRCC, you also do not need to apply again. Use these instructions as a reference when completing the online application.

2.   Complete any required placement testing in English and/or math. Students will need to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) in English and/or Math. (Certain GPAs or scores on the PSAT, ACT, or the SAT may exempt you from having to take a placement test. When in doubt, ask your school counselor. ) Placement testing can be completed at BRCC and on some occasions here at Fort Defiance High School. Students are encouraged to review test material prior to taking placement tests. Review materials can be found here: https://www.brcc.edu/services/testingcenter/placement-testing/.

3.   Return the signed parental permission forms to the Counseling Office prior to the beginning of the course.

4.   Pay the required tuition fee to Fort Defiance High School prior to the beginning of the course. Since the tuition fee is greatly reduced for dual enrollment students, there are no further fee waivers available.
