Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent enrollment refers to college coursework allowing students to earn both a high school and college credit. Students receive instruction at the college (or online) from a college teacher.

Concurrent enrollment is available to seniors and highly motivated juniors.

Students often ask, “Can I take a class at Blue Ridge Community College?” Students may request permission to take concurrent enrollment courses through a local community college like Blue Ridge Community College or Dabney Lancaster Community College.

While dual enrollment refers to students taking college courses in the high school classroom, concurrent enrollment refers to students taking college courses at the college itself or in an online environment.  Students choosing to take a concurrent enrollment course typically take a single college course per semester and are expected to pay full tuition to the local community college.

Interested students must complete the permission forms in the handout below and meet with an advisor at the local community college.

Fort Defiance students will not be approved to take concurrent enrollment courses if the same or equivalent DE course is available to the student at Fort. For example, ENG 111 & ENG 112 is offered through DE College Composition I & II at Fort so those classes would not be approved for concurrent enrollment.

In some cases, with an official signed agreement and pre-approval by the high school, a student may choose to earn both high school and college credit for one or more concurrent college courses. Those courses must award at least three hours of college credit to be considered for concurrent high school credits. Concurrent college classes can affect high school and college GPA, graduation requirements, and athletic eligibility, so all arrangements must be finalized with the high school and college before the course starts.

Students and parents should thoroughly read and complete the steps in this handout after having a discussion with their school counselor about their interest in concurrent enrollment. Students course selections must be approved through the high school prior to signing up for coursework at Blue Ridge Community College. Please print and complete the steps in the handout below to be considered a concurrent enrollment student.
