What is a relationship?

There are many different definitions of the word "relationship." For the purpose of this page, we'll be referring to relationships between people (friendships, familial relationships, romantic relationships, etc.) Here are a few:

A state of connectedness between people.

The way which things are connected or work together.

An emotional or other connection between people.

A connection, association or involvement.

Characteristics of a healthy relationship:

  • Having realistic expectations
  • Respecting yourself & each other
  • Having boundaries
  • Knowing your limitations & the other persons' limitations
  • Open communication
    • Talk about things you don't agree with
      • Don't "low-ball" or "below-the-belt"
  • Taking care of each other AND yourself
  • Dependability
    • Be there for each other
  • Affirmation
    • Support & honesty
  • Prioritize & balance
  • It's a process - it involves constantly working and putting in effort
  • BE YOURSELF!
    • You shouldn't have to change yourself for the person you have a connection with

Remember:

Everyone has different wants and needs in a relationship. Consider the idea that the other persons' may not be the same as yours.
