Growing My Practice Through Inquiry
As teachers we often teach in the same way we were taught…it worked for us!
But this is not always going to work for our students because;
Times have changed
Students have differing needs
Teaching and learning is continually developing and changing
Once we have been teaching for a while we often just keep doing what we have always done, even though we know that what we do is not working for all our students. Teaching is not a ‘one size fits all model’, our students all have different needs and we need to adapt our practice in response to our learners needs.
This inquiry is about doing something different, to grow our practice and therefore reach the learners that our current practice does not work for. You cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different results.
On page 35 of the NZ Curriculum you will find the Teaching as Inquiry framework. This is a cyclical process which is based on moment in time learning which recognises learning needs, implements evidence-based strategies to target these needs and reflects on the impact of the strategies on specific learners.
Teaching as Inquiry addresses 3 key questions;
What is important (and therefore worth spending time on), given where my students are at?
What evidence-based strategies are most likely to help my students learn?
What happened as a result of the teaching & learning, and what are the implications for future teaching?
We have broken the assignment into 3 distinct parts, based on the weeks of practicum and aligned with the 3 questions above.
a) Getting to know my learners, where they are at, their needs and interests (due end of week 1)
b) Planning to try something different : a deliberate teaching action (among the many things that you will do every day) (due end of week 2)
c) Implementing the action and evaluating the impact of our deliberate action. What measures will I use to know if what I am doing is actually having an impact (implemented during weeks 3 & 4 and due end of week 4)
