The Catalog & Reserves tab is the best place to search for physical materials offered by the library, such as books, ebooks, videos, theses, microforms, and other print materials physically available at the library.
You can search the AUC catalog by:
Keyword (any word)
Author (remember to put the author's last name first)
Title
Subject Heading (determined subject terms)
Journal Title (for print journals)
Call Number
Books on reserve (search by professor name)
Books on reserve (search by course number)
A database is any collection of records that may be electronically searched in multiple ways. In libraries, these are most often online catalogs or collections of articles and citations.
Interdisciplinary databases cover as much information as possible on many subject areas
Subject-specific databases focus on as much information as possible relevant to one discipline or subject area
Format-specific databases collect information based on the type of source – for example, a database with only images or music files
Publisher/Publication databases collect all of the journals and/or books owned by one publisher, or the full history of one publication (usually a newspaper or magazine)
Digitize archival materials can be found in the AUC Rare Books and Special Collections Digital Library. These are primary sources that pertain to AUC and Egypt.
Subject guides, also referred to as LibGuides, are web pages curated by librarians that gather useful resources on a subject.
To find them, hover your cursor over the "Research" tab at the top of the page and select "Subject Guides."
From there you will find a list of Subject Guides created by AUC librarians.
The "Live Chat" service is useful if you need help on your research at any time of the day.
A professional librarian will be available to provide you research help 24/7.
You can choose to read eBooks online or to download them.
To download and read an eBook you will sometimes need a special software called “Adobe Digital Editions.” Download Adobe Digital Editions for free using your AUC email.
Step 1:
Find the record for the book and click "Connect to Full Text." You will probably skip this step if you are searching from Library OneSearch.
Step 2:
Enter your AUC credentials (username and password) and click "Login."
Step 3:
In ProQuest Ebook Central you will find the book that you searched. You can read online, print or download a selected amount of pages, or download the book to read offline.
Step 4:
If you wish to download the book, select one of the icons that says "Download Book."
Step 5:
A box prompting you to download Adobe Digital Editions will appear. Follow the steps to download the software if it is your first time using it, otherwise skip the download. You will be asked how long you want to check the book out for.
Step 6:
Your bookshelf will appear. From here you can open the book you downloaded, read it and annotate it until the check out period expires.
Finding print books in the library is not difficult, but it requires that you know a few things about the library and something called "call numbers."
If you find a print book on Library OneSearch or in the Catalog & Reserves tab, you will find some additional information about it below its bibliographic information: LOCATION, CALL# and STATUS.
Step 1: Check the location to see which section of the library the book is located.
Step 2: Check the status to see if the book is available to check out.
Step 3: Check the call number to see where on the shelf it is located.
LOCATION: Refers to the area of the library the book is located.
Main Library: 1st or 2nd floor / 28-day check out / unrestricted area of the library

SPCL: 3rd floor Rare Books and Special Collections / no check out / restricted area
CALL#: Is essentially the address of the book in the library. Each book is ascribed a unique call number that signify the book's precise location in the library.
Call numbers at AUC follow the Library of Congress Classification System (see chart below).
STATUS: Refers to the availability of the book. "Check shelf" means it is available. If it is checked out, then it will state its due date.
Policies for borrowing print books can be found by hovering over the "Services" tab in the menu at the top of the screen. Select "Borrow, Renew, Request Books" to find the policies regarding borrowing, loan periods, returns and fines, lost items, renewal, and requests.
