I found this graffiti written on a desk in one of the library rooms. I knew this was not about my class... Because LALT is not only useful, but FUN.
LALT stands for "Library and Learning Technologies."
Our subject is Information Literacy, a subject necessary for students to study early in their college career because it prepares you for research.
Librarians first defined Information Literacy as a set of skills used for the following:
Recognizing that you need to know something you do not know
Developing strategies to find what you do not know
Understanding the new information you found
Evaluating the new information you found
Using your new information in the right way
Adapting legal and ethical issues associated with acquiring and using the new information
In 2015, librarians determined that information literacy is not simply a set of skills and outcomes, but is something a lot more dynamic and fluid. They adjusted the definition to the following:
Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.
Furthermore, they described the various aspects of this definition using the framework below. For a deeper look, see ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
Who you trust is agreed upon and varies depending on the situation.
Research is done in stages and formats are designed for particular audiences.
Information is important to people for different reasons.
Research is an Inquiry
Research begins with a question and includes a series of questions.
Scholarship is a Conversation
Every topic can be considered an ongoing conversation between scholars.
Searching is a Strategic Exploration
Research requires a method and sometimes creativity.
The LALT instructors belong to the RIS Department of the Main Library. We are responsible for assisting undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and visiting scholars with their research needs. We are available by appointment or Live Chat found on the AUC Library Homepage. Above are a few things we can help with like finding a topic, accessing sources, finding useful tools, and citing.
Below are a few things we cannot help you with like doing for you the tasks of finding a topic, fetching sources, evaluating them, proofreading, and correcting your citations. As you can imagine, we deal with a lot of people on a regular basis. Hence, LALT serves as the course in which we provide you the training to perform these tasks on your own.
You can pass LALT if you...
