Course Description:
LALT lays the groundwork for building 21st century information literacy skills.
Information literacy is fundamental to all disciplines at the university-level and is a pillar of lifelong learning. This course is designed to help undergraduate students concurrently enrolled in RHET 1020 develop their research skills through exposure to information literacy concepts and library technologies. You will learn to find, evaluate, and cite information in an academic context. We will examine concepts of popular and scholarly information, peer review, primary and secondary sources, and authority, and explore how those intersecting ideas impact your academic research. Furthermore, you will become comfortable using tools and resources in the library to support your learning and research throughout your degree.
What You Will Learn
You will learn how to apply the skills and concepts you learn in LALT to research done in other courses. In order to achieve this goal you will be required to complete multiple-choice exercises, simulations, brief reflective exercises, and other duties essential to the learning outcomes. After completing the course, you will be able to:
Find, access, and accurately cite sources for academic research
Understand how information is categorized and organized in the scholarly community
Judge the authority of different sources of information for your academic research
Evaluate the accuracy of information found online and determine whether it is beneficial or not
Understand your digital presence and safeguard your virtual footprint.
Grading
This is a Pass / Fail course. In order to pass you must earn a minimum of 70 out of 100 points. The breakdown is as follows:
Weekly In-Class Activities: 50 %
Citation Workshop: 10%
Practicum: 40 %
All weekly in-class activities and practicum activities must be submitted by their due dates. All In-Class activities should be done during the class period. They will not be accepted after that. Failure to complete the assignments in a timely fashion will lead to a failing grade in the course. It is your responsibility to seek help if you are having trouble with any aspect of the course.
Extra Credit
If you miss an assignment or make a low score. You can make it up by completing extra credit activities. There are two (2) ways to get extra credit in this course.
You can complete the periodic extra credit activities offered throughout the semester.
You can schedule an appointment with the instructor ONLY to receive help with a research assignment from another class. You will receive 2 points extra credit for every visit . Extra credit will be offered until the first day of the Practicum.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
We will meet once a week during our scheduled class time. Students are required to attend all classes and complete all activities (in class) to receive credit for attendance. This is 50% of your total grade. Any in-class activities that are done outside of class (while absent) will not be accepted (you will receive a 0).
Late Policy:
Attendance will be taken each week during the first 5 minutes of class. We only have 50 minutes for class every week, so due to this short time, students who are more than 5 minutes late to class will be counted as absent for the day. Please be on time.
Missing Class and Makeup Policy:
If you miss a class, you will receive a 0 for the day.
Students who miss more than 3 classes during the semester are subject to failing the course.
You must inform the instructor before class (via email), if you will not attend a class due to an emergency or medical issue. Students may only make up classes and activities with an official note from AUC (via the Dean of Students Office). If you are sick or have a medical emergency, the instructor must also have an official note from the AUC Clinic to make up missed classes and work. This is in accordance with AUC’s official attendance policy, which you may view here: <http://catalog.aucegypt.edu/content.php?catoid=20&navoid=850>.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

AUC’s CODE OF ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
“Academic integrity is a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. From these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic communities to translate ideals into action. All activities at the American University in Cairo, from teaching to administrative and support functions, serve the process of learning. Together, the university’s faculty, staff, and students form a cohesive academic community which shares the Code of Academic and Professional Ethics outlined”: <http://www.aucegypt.edu/academics/integrity/Pages/default.aspx>
VIOLATION OF ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
“Academic fraud and dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following categories: cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, multiple submissions, obtaining unfair advantage, unauthorized access to academic or administrative systems, aiding and abetting, impersonation, threatening harm, and copyright infringement.” <http://www.aucegypt.edu/about/Policies/Pages/default.aspx>.
