Part of becoming FLUENT in the language of jazz is knowing the basic building blocks of the music that is happening in the tunes that you are playing. This means that you need to expand your musical vocabulary. To do this, memorize the following both with your fingers, and with note names, going up and down. (Hint: Learn how to use modes to help yourself use your knowledge of your newly menorized major scales to play the mixolydian, dorian, and locrian modes.)
All 12 major scales
All 12 Dominant 7th scales (The Mixolydian Mode)
All 12 Minor 7th scales (The Dorian Mode)
The 3 diminished scales and their applications
Become fluent in the half-diminished scales (The Locrian Mode)
*This information can be found in Jamey Abersold's books, which come with play-a-long tracks for practice. I can't recommend Jamey Abersold's information and play-a-long books enough. Many jazz musicians have spent hours & hours practicing with his books.
