Do not hand off your foster pet without clear approval from the adoption or foster team by email.
After a successful meet and greet, update the adopter's inquiry to “IT’S A MATCH!” in the corresponding email. Confirm the adopter would like to move forward in adopting your foster pet as well.
When you are ready to hand off your foster to the adoptive family, direct the adopter to join the shelter’s remote adoption queue titled “Adoption Processing (ONLY OFFSITE OR EVENT)” during open shelter hours.
If you are adopting your foster pet, please join the foster adoption queue for your location using the correct link provided below.
After joining the queue, the adoption team will contact you directly for counseling and to complete the application. Keep an eye on your phone and email for correspondence!
If you need extra help, to confirm that an adoption has been completed, or to conduct an out-of-state adoption, follow up with the foster and adoption team by email for support or clarification.
Use the toolkits below for step-by-step instructions for the foster pet adoption process. These toolkits include a checklist, information about setting up meet and greets, and information about how to use our adoption processing tool, Adopets, to answer adoption inquiries about your foster.
LifeLine uses the Humane Society of the United States’ Adopters Welcome approach. This approach welcomes community members, encourages them to adopt and helps them and their pets succeed. Adopters Welcome enables us to find more great homes for our shelter and foster animals without unnecessary judgment. Please review the Adopters Welcome policy.
If your foster pet gets adopted, help set them up for success by sending them the webpage below. Similar to the foster resources page, this contains guides for adopters to help set their new pet up for success in their home, educates them on what to do in case of an emergency, and sets them up with our support and adoption emails to contact if they have any questions that you're unable to answer. This is a great site to send to your foster's new family to set them up for success.
