One of the aims of the CSIP is to raise the school community’s awareness about social issues and concerns to further encourage meaningful social involvement. Despite the differences in views and opinions, we are hopeful that students will be able to learn to stand for what they believe is right properly guided by their faith to God.
As part of the Ateneo de Manila Junior High School's Self Development Program, CSIP invites you to reflect on how they make decisions and judgments on different matters whether personal or societal.
Watch the following video about making assumptions and quick judgement:
Situations like the one from the video and the ones you have shared on the Padlet could be avoided if we remember to stop and think before we make judgement. This ability to suspend judgement and think about things in a deliberate way is called Critical Thinking.
Dictionary.com defines critical thinking as:
“disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence”
Following the definition, critical thinking takes discipline and is a skill that should be practiced. The following video provides us tips on how to improve our application of critical thinking in our daily lives:
The video advises us to apply these five steps to help us think critically:
1
Formulate your question
2
Gather
your
information
3
Apply
the information
4
Consider
the
implications
5
Explore other points of view
Applying these steps will hopefully help you seek alternative solutions, evaluate different choices, and to overall have more informed decisions.
TRY THIS!
1. Find a news article or opinion piece from a reputable news source.
2. Apply the five steps in evaluating the news article or opinion piece.
3. Share your thoughts and questions that resulted from your critical thinking exercise on the padlet provided.
4. Comment your thoughts and suggestions on the other posts from your classmates.
REFLECTION
Are there situations where critical thinking may not be that helpful? Is there wisdom in the advice to “follow your gut”?
CONCRETE ACTION
Practice critical thinking in your daily interactions and consumption of media. In examining the many social issues in our country, critical thinking is a must. Formulate your own thoughts and judgement instead of passively accepting the opinions of others.
