Extension Requests

For Summer 2025 CPT extension requests, students must send an email scai.grad.cpt@asu.edu with the following information, no later than August 10, 2025. The subject line should read "extension request".

• Original end date listed on the SCAI CPT application (not the CPT I-20)

• New end date

• Academic justification for the extension

Important!

• The new end date cannot be later than the day before the Fall 2025 semester begins (August 20, 2025) for continuing students, or later than the last day of finals for graduating students.

• Students must have a valid academic justification for the extension.  Extending CPT for reasons relating to pay or employer need will are not acceptable.

• It is important to save the email approval from SCAI Advising in case questions arise in the future.

• All students approved for a CPT extension should check that the new end date falls within the end date listed on the I-20.

  • • Generally, non-thesis master's students need approval from SCAI Advising (scai.grad.cpt@asu.edu) only, and do not also need to email ISSC. 

    • Thesis/dissertation students will typically need an updated I-20 and should also email issc.employment@asu.edu with the proof of approval of the extension from SCAI Advising. Then ISSC will work to issue an updated I-20.  It is important for students to receive the I-20 extension before proceeding to work beyond the original end date.
