Smouldering Freedom (1945) es la segunda autobiografía de Isabel de Palencia. Narra sus primeros años en el exilio y cuenta la realidad de los exiliados de la España franquista en México y los que huyeron a Francia.  Según Pilar Nieva de la Paz, en su ensayo, "Isabel Oyarzábal Smith, una republicana exiliada en México", explica que Smouldering Freedom,

" (...) ofrece una visión más completa de los primero años de exilio en México.  Transcurrido un lustro desde el final de la Guerra, la autora gozaba de una mejor perspectiva y manejaba distintas fuentes que le ofrecían nueva información sobre los acontecimientos vividos (ensayos de otros políticos republicanos y testimonios orales de los exiliados que iban llegando a su nuevo país.) (...) Conviene recordar que este texto no ha sido publicado en España hasta 2009, cuando apareció traducido al español con el título Rescoldos de libertad: guerra civil y exilio en México, en el marco de la corriente editorial de recuperación de la memoria republicana estimulada por la aprobación de la llamada "Ley de la Memoria Histórica" en 2007." (117)

Smouldering Freedom (1945) is the second autobiography by Isabel de Palencia. It narrates her first years in exile and tells of the reality of the exiles from Francoist Spain in Mexico and those that fled to France. According to Pilar Nieva de la Paz, in her essay, "Isabel Oyarzábal Smith, a republican exiled in Mexico", she explains that Smouldering Freedom,

"(...) offers a more complete vision of the first years of exile in Mexico. Five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War, the author enjoys a better perspective and is able to find different sources offering her new information about lived experiences (essays of other republican politicians and oral testimonies of exiles that were arriving in her new country.) (...) It is important to remember that this text was not published in Spanish until 2009, when it appeared translated into Spanish with the title Rescoldos de libertad: guerra civil y exilio en México (Embers of Freedom: Civil War and Exile in Mexico, in the editorial framework of the recovery of republican memory stimulated by the approal of the so-call "Historical Memory Law" in 2007."
