H5P stands for HTML5 Package. It is an open-source content creation tool designed to help educators build engaging, interactive experiences without coding skills. Today, H5P supports over 50 activity types, including interactive video, presentations, image hotspots, drag-and-drop exercises, and games (H5P Training Manual, n.d.).

Digital learning often struggles with low engagement. Learners are presented with text-heavy slides or long videos, leaving them as passive consumers rather than active participants.
H5P addresses this by embedding active learning principles into digital instruction. Studies show that learners consistently prefer interactive tools like H5P compared to non-interactive methods, reporting higher satisfaction and motivation (Jacob & Centofanti, 2023; Mir et al., 2022).
While results on direct performance gains vary, research confirms that interactivity encourages deeper engagement. For example, Jacob and Centofanti (2023) found that when students used H5P activities with embedded questions, they reported significantly more positive experiences and wanted such activities to be used more frequently.
For learning designers, H5P is important because it aligns with constructivist and connectivist views of learning: learners build knowledge through activity, collaboration, and feedback, not passive reception.
