While we'll have plenty of programs going on throughout the Star Party, the area around Cherry Springs has some GREAT places to visit and make day trips out of! Make sure to make some time to go offsite and visit some of these wonderful places! Plan a trip to one of these places for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday Morning/Afternoon!

  • Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania - 45 minute drive from Coudersport - The PA Grand Canyon is made up of Colton Point State Park and Leonard Harrison State Park which make up each side of the canyon. Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks offer spectacular and a fabulous views of the Pine Creek Gorge, within the Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is located off of U.S. Route 6, 20 miles east of Galeton and 14 miles West of Wellsboro. The Pine Creek Gorge, which is part of the Grand Canyon is a National Natural Landmark. Leonard Harrison, on the east rim, and Colton Point, on the west rim, overlook the scenic Grand Canyon. The canyon is 47 miles long, and 800 feet deep at this location. The canyon offers not only breathtaking scenery, but numerous activities along the rim and along the canyon floor. Visitors can raft, canoe, bike, cross-country ski, and enjoy miles upon miles of various hiking and backpacking trails.
  • Coudersport Ice Mine - Just up the road from Cherry Springs State Park is the Coudersport Ice Mine on Route 44 just before Route 6. Open Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Kinzua Bridge State Park - 1 hour drive from Coudersport - Kinzua Bridge State Park is located four miles north of U.S. Route 6 at Mt. Jewett on State Route 3011. The Kinzua Bridge was designated a National Engineering Landmark. The Bridge was 301 feet tall and 2053 feet long. The bridge was recently toppled during an unusual weather event in 2003. Portions of the bridge still stand. Picnicking, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, and organized group tenting is available within the park. There is a paved trail to the bridge as well as an overlook platform.
  • Lyman Run State Park - Lyman Run State Park is located 15 miles east of Coudersport and 7 miles west of Galeton. It provides recreational opportunities for swimmers, boaters, and fisherman on the 45 acre lake (lake currently closed). Also available are picnic facilities, family camping, hiking, hunting, and backpacking. Winter activities in the park include ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
  • Ole Bull State Park - Ole Bull State Park, along the Kettle Creek Valley on PA Route 144, 15 miles south of Galeton and just north of Cross Fork, offers family camping, hiking, swimming, picnicking, fishing, and hunting and trapping. In the winter, both cross-country skiing and snowshoes are permitted in the park. Also available is access to snowmobile trails. The park area is referred to as the Black Forest of Pennsylvania.
  • Patterson State Park - Patterson State Park, located on PA Route 44, 10 miles south of Coudersport, in the Susquehannock State Forest, provides access to snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, overnight camping, and a picnic area.
  • Prouty Place State Park - Prouty Place State Park is located 5 miles southwest of PA Route 44 along Long Toe road about 10 miles from Coudersport. The 5-acre park offers access to hunting, fishing and hiking within the surrounding Susquehannock State Forest.
  • Sinnemahoning State Park - Sinnemahoning State Park is in Cameron and Potter counties, 38 miles south of Coudersport on PA Route 872, just south of Austin. This park offers a picturesque view of surrounding hill and valleys as well as a reservoir lake. There is camping sites, cabins, picnicking, hiking areas, as well as fishing and hunting areas also available. Located in the park is the George B. Stevenson Dam and Reservoir, which allows for boating and fishing.
  • Susquehannock State Forest - The Susquehannock State Forest includes the middle and southern end of Potter County. Recreation for this area includes, hiking, camping, mountain biking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, ATV trails, hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. Hiking and cross country skiing is available on the Susquehannock Trail System, an 85-mile loop. Also 200 miles of trails are available for snowmobiling. During the summer months, a 43-mile-ATV trail is available.

Nearby Lodging

The Astronomical Society of Harrisburg encourages all those attending the Star Party to stay on the Observing Field for the event as camping on the Observing Field is included in the registration fee. However, we realize some may wish to stay off site at an "indoor" location. For those looking for places to stay ASH provides this list to those interested in doing so.
