Edgar Sewter's Project
Edgar Sewter identified that some children don't eat school dinners because they don't like the look of it or are uncomfortable with trying new foods. They found this out through interviewing staff and surveying children, leading them to discover that children could find the name of meals confusing and worry about what was in it - and whether they would like it. This term staff then started to explain the choices to children and encourage them to try more foods and now more children are making wider choices. They learned a lot of children in our school don’t have a broad food taste and need to try more things if they are going to eat school dinners more often
Following the results they also set up tasting sessions for school dinners with some of the ingredients coming from the school gardens as they chose to grow more vegetables in the school garden for students to try. This encouraged the students to be more adventurous in what they were eating as well as making them feel more involved in the process as they helped grow the vegetables themselves.
They spent their money on seeds and making an allotment - every year group has a section- along with purchasing an air fryer. All classes have said they want to do more cooking so next year they plan to have more cooking on their timetables and create an after-school
cookery club.
