A: Planning

Criterion A: Planning

You must:

-state a learning goal for the project and explain how a personal interest led to that goal

-state an intended product and develop appropriate success criteria for the product

-present a clear, detailed plan for achieving the product and its associated success criteria.

The Goal

This is where you start. You must identify a realistic but challenging goal to achieve.

Your goal should consist of two interrelated parts: a product and a learning goal.

The product is what you will create and the learning goal is what you want to learn. Unlike the previous years, the Global context is now optional.

You should choose a topic that is of long-term interest to you. Don’t choose a topic that might be unfashionable or boring by next month. When thinking about what you might like to do, remember that you will be the person completing the PP; so choose something that you will enjoy doing for an extended period that will present opportunities for personal growth.

The Product

Some examples you could do…

  • An original piece of artwork (art, music, dramatic performance, composition, playwriting, etc.)

  • A written piece of work on a special topic (literary, social, psychological, anthropological)

  • A piece of literary fiction (creative writing)

  • An original science experiment, showing appropriate design methodology

  • An original website

  • The presentation of developed business, management, or organizational plan, ( i.e. for an entrepreneurial business or project, a special event or community organization

  • Produce a music CD; original recording, design and promotion

  • A children’s story

  • An invention

The personal project is truly personal because each student will set their own goal based on something they find interesting.

Your product may be a tangible artifact such as a sculpture, film, story or model, or it could be a non-tangible result such as an awareness-raising campaign, learning to play a new piece of music or improving athletic performance.

The Success Criteria

You must develop success criteria in the early stages of your personal product. It must be developed before your product is completed.

When you have completed your product, you use your success criteria to evaluate the extent to which you achieved your product goal. This evaluation forms the basis for explaining the impact of the project and can also help you to select the evidence of the ATL skills to include in your report.

The Action Plan

You will need to create an action plan for achieving your chosen product. This demonstrates how you manage your time.

To create a detailed action plan, you should first develop success criteria for your product and determine the necessary steps or actions that will be required to meet those criteria. This will also establish a foundation to explain whether or not the goal was achieved in the report.

Both your Success Criteria and your Action Plan must be imbedded in your report!

The process of developing success criteria and establishing an action plan to meet the success criteria is likely to require some research. Similarly, you may need to carry out research related to your learning goal, which could be included as part of your action plan.
