The required equipment is a sweep net, 4 flags, a thermometer, petri dishes(4), plastic bags(2), a clipboard, data sheet, writing utensil, a phone, a measuring tape(at least 1 meter), and field guides for both insects and plants.
Procedure
Find a suitable area with plants, be aware of woody or too dense foliage, this will make sweep netting difficult
Establish a 1m x 1m quadrat (square) by placing a flag and using the tape measure to measure 1m between each flag
Use iNaturalist and/or field guides to identify plants in the quadrat and write the species and amount down and the amount on your data sheet
Use the sweepnet and sweep side to side or in a figure 8 pattern 10 times
Flick the sides of the net to move the bugs to the bottom of the net
Grab the net half way and grab a plastic bag
Turn the net inside out into the plastic bag and seal the bag
Use iNaturalist and/or field guides to identify any bugs inside and write the species down on your data sheet (If you can’t get clear pictures within the bag, you can put the bugs in the petri dish.)
Release the bugs from the bag or petri dish
Section off your data and record your location on your data sheet
Repeat the procedure in different environments and areas and compare
