Our project focuses on the relationship of plants and insects. We wanted to see if the diversity of plants would correlate with the diversity of bugs. Our thinking was that the more types of plants there were would equal more types of bugs in the area. The increased types of plants would mean more relationships between different type of bugs. We also made sure to keep track of other environmental variables like temperature, humidity, ecosystem, and wind which could affect the biodiversity of bugs.
To test this, we used sweepnet and quadrat techniques. Apps like iNaturalist were used to identify bugs and plants. Other variables like temperature were also collected. By collecting this data, we were able to compare the biodiversity of bugs and plants from area to area while accounting for other environmental factors.
You can help us with our question through replicating our experiment through our procedure or just going outside and observing bugs on plants!
