Hand Sewing, Machine Sewing & #MadeByMe Project
Throughout the year, students will learn an assortment of hand and machine sewing techniques and will build their own sample book for future reference and development. We will start by learning the basics of hand sewing to get a feel for what it is like to work with a needle and thread.
As the year progresses, we will learn how to use a sewing machine, including all the settings and safety checks. We will end the year with a #MadeByMe project where the students can use all of the skills that they learned. They will be guided with different ideas for their project, but in the end we will encourage them to design something on their own.

Oct 3: Intro to ASA - Getting to know each other. Start sample books.
Oct 10: Hand Sewing: Basic Stitches - Getting used to working with a needle and thread.
Oct 17: Hand Sewing: Basic Stitches - Make your own felt tissue holder and learn the blanket stitch.
Oct 24: Hand Sewing: Basic Stitches - Finish tissue holder and start the pencil case using your choice of decorative stitches.
Oct 31: Hand Sewing: Practice Basic Stitches & Learn Decorative Stitches - Finish tissue holder and pencil case. Work on stitch samples.
Nov 7: Hand Sewing: Cross Stitch

Jan 9 & 16: Review Sewing Machine Basics & Work on Module 1 Project: Patchwork Pillow - Finish cross stitching project and use the sewing machine to sew your pillow together.
Jan 23, 30 & Feb 6: FINISH Module 1 Project: Patchwork Pillow - Finish by using the sewing machine to sew your pillow together.

Feb 13: Intro to Module 2 Projects - Learn how to lay out and cut fabric. We will start by cutting the pieces we need for our cozy pants & drawstring bag.
Feb 20: Module 2 Project: Finish cutting and start sewing your cozy pants together based on the pattern.
Mar 6: Module 2 Project: Design the print for your drawstring bag. Use fabric paint with sponges and stamps to design your own fabric.
Mar 13: Module 2 Project: Sew together your drawstring bag.
Mar 27: Catch Up Day!
Module 2 Projects: Finish drawstring bag and cozy pants project.
Apr 10: Intro to #MadeByMe Project - Our uniquely designed project begins. We will share inspirational ideas and patterns and help the students.

Final designs will be displayed in school to celebrate #MeMadeMay, on-campus event tentatively planned for Saturday, May 27.
May 29: ASA Evaluation - We want to hear from the students and get a good discussion going, including lots of feedback from students.
