Drama 9

Course Description

This course begins with basic stage positions and postures to help students develop their presentation skills. Students will learn the tools and techniques of an actor to improve their concentration, confidence, listening skills, and speaking skills. They will also learn the basics of mime, physical articulation, improvisation, and how they can use their improv skills to broaden their thinking and responses to every day situations.

Course Objectives

To better understand our selves and our relationship to the world
To become more empathetic to other people and behaviors through character study and discussion
To learn how to ground our bodies, stand upright, speak with confidence, and look people in the eyes
To explore how the posture of the body can affect the comportment of the mind
To cultivate creativity and imaginative storytelling through individual self expression
To practice acting on impulse without self-censorship or judgement
To facilitate self awareness of each individual's physical and linguistic habits
To introduce new ways of thinking about what it is to be human, and how we can use empathy to create more compassionate and productive communities
To gain a better understanding of text through spoken word in regards to scansion, tempo, musicality, consonants and vowels
