No! There is absolutely no service obligation to the military if you join JROTC; we are simply an elective course that has ties to the military. Many Cadets have joined and not gone into service, we are only interested in teaching you how to become a leader!
Yes, if you are a male, then you will have to cut your hair to military standards. If you are female, then you do not have to cut your hair. Please see our Cadet Uniforms page under Cadet Resources if you still have questions about our grooming standards.
Nope! Our Physical Training (PT) is not that hard and is usually quite fun. What we care about isn't how many push-ups you can do or how long your mile time is, but rather whether or not you are putting in the effort. If you're putting in effort, then that's all that matters to us!
You are only required to wear uniforms once a week for the school day. If you sign up for a JROTC event like a color guard, then you would have to wear a uniform for that event.
We teach lessons primarily about aviation and leadership. These lessons usually are usually either an interactive presentation or hands-on learning. We also teach skills like Drill, Archery, and Riflery.
You can participate in a variety of JROTC extracurriculars that aren't offered anywhere else! You can also participate in our community service events as well. If you have any more questions about our extracurriculars, please go to our JROTC Extracurricular page under Benefits.
The people who are in JROTC are not all too serious about the military. Most are very relaxed and friendly, and the the corps is involved in almost every single thing at West!
Nope, absolutely not! Our instructors in the program may be veterans, but they are not drill sergeants. They are still High School teachers who have to follow the school rules. Though they might remind you to follow the rules of JROTC time from time.
No, JROTC Robotics has no relation to West High Robotics besides the fact that we both build robots. We are two separate teams that compete in two separate divisions.
Nope! The uniforms that we issue cadets are free of charge, like most things we offer. We do, however, charge cadets if they lose a piece of their uniform. As well as requiring cadets to dry clean their Service Blue Dress Uniform in accordance with the Air Force standards of cleanliness.
