General Information
In JROTC, it is expected of all cadets to participate in our Physical Training (PT) activities and wear their PT gear for a grade. However, if you're not in the best of shape or don't like physical activities, that's fine! The only thing we care about is that you put in effort. We care more about improvement than anything else! As long as you do that, you will receive full credit. Our PT lessons alternate between hard, regular, and fun days.
At the beginning of the year and the end of the year, we do the Presidential Fitness Exam. It is an exam meant to assess how physically fit a cadet is. The exam consists of three events: a one-mile run, push-ups for one minute, and sit-ups for one minute. Depending on their scores, cadets can earn a bronze, silver, or gold star for their PT ribbon.
Some scholarships and opportunities offered through JROTC may require cadets to be in the upper percentiles of physical fitness.
Presidential Fitness Exam
Below is are exam benchmarks for cadets scores and tips on how to improve your scores.
How to Improve Your Push-Up Score
Push-ups are a great way to assess a cadet's fitness because they engage multiple muscle groups in the upper body while engaging the core and legs for stability. They also allow for an easy assessment of a cadet's overall upper body strength and muscle endurance. If you cannot do a push-up, that's fine! Please go to this embedded page to see the other exercises you can do to progress to a push-up, or if you want to see harder variations.
How to Improve Your Sit-Up Score
Sit-ups are used to assess a cadets core strength, since it uses the abdominal muscles. This makes it a good indicator of a cadet's core strength and core muscle endurance. If you want to improve your score, please see the embedded page.
How to Improve Your Mile Time
We do the mile run to assess a cadet's cardiovascular endurance. It is okay if you can't run or jog the whole mile, just walk briskly to recover your stamina! Remember, we only care about your effort, not your score. If you want to improve your time, please see the nearby embedded page.
