About Mrs. Spain

I was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but was raised in Pittsburgh.  After graduating from Penn State and teaching in Central PA as a gifted education teacher for five years, I moved to Alaska in 2005.  

I started my career in ASD as a 5th/6th-grade teacher at Willow Crest Elementary.  In 2008, I transferred to Eagle River Elementary, where I spent ten years as a 5th/6th Open Optional teacher. Starting the 2018-2019 school year, I transferred into a new position as a neighborhood 5th-grade teacher. After the earthquake in November 2018, my class and I transferred to Birchwood Elementary for the remainder of the 2018-1019 school year, followed by two years at Homestead Elementary. When the building reopened for the 2021-2022 school year, I returned to the Open Optional Program to teach 5th and 6th grade for two more years, followed by two years teaching 4th grade on the neighborhood side. Starting the 2025-2026 school year, I have returned to the Open Optional Program (again!) this time as a 2nd/3rd grade teacher. This is a new adventure for me, and I'm looking forward to working with younger students.

In my free time, I enjoy gardening, hiking, camping, doing yoga, working out at CrossFit Iron Refined, and spending time with my husband, Brian.
