How Can I Help My Child Succeed in Music?
It is the parent’s responsibility to encourage home practice to nurture and foster the musical talent of their child.
Home Practice FAQ's
Who- Every student should practice their instrument at home. The parents should listen and offer encouragement and constructive feedback.
What- Check the weekly practice assignments page. Every student has a black binder of sheet music. (6th graders have a text-book too)
When- A minimum of 3 times a week for 30 min.
Where-The practice space should have a music stand, and a proper chair for good posture. The musician should not feel self-conscious in this space as they attempt difficult skills and challenging music. They should be practicing what they “can’t do yet”. It’s OK if this sounds “bad”, as long as they make a little progress every time.
Why- Individual practice is the time for a student to focus on their tone and precision. This is what makes them a leader in the orchestra!
How- Remember “Practice makes Permanent”. If you strive to practice with correct posture and technique you will achieve superior results. If you practice with bad habits, you will reinforce those. Quality repetition is the key!
