Welcome South Carolina Cheer Coaches!
Brief History: On December 7, 1985, the SCCCA was formally chartered. In February of 1985, a constitution was created and doors were opened to the SCHSL to help our leadership contact coaches. The goals were to increase the state’s awareness of the need to adopt Cheerleading as a sport and to promote the safe guidelines published by the various organizations that conduct summer cheerleading camps across the nation. After its creation, interest waned but was revitalized with a meeting held at Williams Brice Stadium in 1989. New officers were elected, regions were drawn up, and regional representatives were appointed. The SCCCA was then established as a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide a support group for Cheer coaches and advisors, to promote coaches and advisors as dedicated professionals, and to promote the uniformity of safety guidelines for all cheerleaders in the state of South Carolina.
The 1989 Officers of the newly organized SCCCA were President: Elaine Elliott (Lexington HS), Vice President: Genice Thompson (Mid Carolina HS), Treasurer: Jeni Smallwood (Gilbert HS), Corresponding Secretary: Melva Atkinson (Wilson HS), Recording Secretary: Nickie Moose (West Florence HS) and Chaplain: Arlene Johnson (Mullins HS). The SCCCA became a part of the SCHSL in 1996 and the first Statewide Cheer Championship was held under the league.
The SCCCA held their first Statewide competition in December of 1990, first Spring Luncheon in May 1993 and first SCACA Clinic in July of 1993. Past Presidents of the SCCCA: Lorraine Johnson, Elaine Elliott, Sherri Kirkland, and Kathy Harris.
