The Bear Bean is a fun weekly "job" that our students work in. We have a lot of fun, but it is also a LOT of work. Here is a list of every job description in our shop:
Every Wednesday afternoon in Functional Foods, the following jobs are completed in preparation for the shop being opened on Thursday:
1st/2nd Block Planning
Students read the Google Sheet table of this week’s orders. For every order they write the room number, teacher name, and method of payment on the planning form for the correct block. This form will be used during deliveries tomorrow when the shop is open.

1st/2nd Block Count + Crate
Students read the Google Sheet table of this week’s orders. They use the table to determine how many cold drinks (smoothies + iced coffees) and hot drinks (coffee + hot chocolate + apple cider) are in each block. Then they take the numbers of hot and cold, and count that many hot supplies (cup, sleeve, lid) and cold supplies (cup, lid, straw). They place those supplies in the crate for the block they’re working on.

Smoothie Inventory
Students read the Google Sheets table of this week’s orders. They count out the number of Strawberry Smoothies, Strawberry Banana Smoothies, and Tropical Smoothies for each block. Then they determine how many total orders of each smoothie flavor for the day there will be, and check to make sure we have enough inventory to fill the orders. Lastly, they fill a freezer bag with the number of smoothie bags of each flavor, per block. If there is not enough inventory for tomorrow, they communicate this to the person making smoothie bags.

Students read the Google Sheets table of this week’s orders. They fill out the label with the information on the table. This includes, name, room number, type of drink, type and amount of creamer, sweetener, and syrup, and payment method.

Color Code Labels
After the labels have been written, another student has a color-coded list of the shop’s ingredients. They read each label and use the color code to use markers to code each label for non-readers to independently make the drinks tomorrow.

Brew Iced Coffee
Students read the Google Sheets table to determine how many total iced coffees have been ordered for tomorrow. Then they use the Keurig to brew that many coffees, and put them in a refrigerator container to get cold for tomorrow.

Punch Card Delivery
Students deliver any The Bear Bean punch cards that have been ordered this week.

Students read the Google Sheets table, and copy each room number onto a sticky label. These will be used tomorrow for delivery.

Students make smoothie bags by measuring out the correct amount of each ingredient that goes into each smoothie and putting it in a Ziploc bag.

Every Thursday we open the shop in 1st and 2nd block and complete the following jobs:
Labels/Sleeves/Pods
Peel off sticker labels, place them on the sleeve (hot drinks) or cup (cold drinks), put the sleeve on the cup (hot drinks), read the color coded label to determine drink, and set the correct drink pod out beside the cup.

Run the Keurig
Get the cup and pod from the previous station, and use the Keurig to make the hot drink. When drink is finished, tell creamer person.

Get the drink from the Keurig station, read the label to determine type and amount of cream. Measure the correct cream and add to drink.

Get the drink from the creamer station, read the label to determine type and amount of sweetener. Count out the correct number of packets, open, and add to drink.

Press pump all the way down the correct number of times
Make Iced Coffees
Take the cold coffee brewed yesterday from the refrigerator. Fill cup with ice. Pour cold coffee ¼ of way up cup. Pass to creamer. After drink goes through cream, sweetener, syrup, it comes back. Fill the rest of the way up with ice. Pour coffee until it reaches the top. Take to Stir/Lid/Number station.

Read the label and dump smoothie bag in the blender. Add 1 cup of milk to blender. Blend until smooth. Read the label to determine if any sugar or honey needs to be added and add the correct amount.

Stir/Lid/Number
Put the correct lid (hot/cold) on the drink, and use a stirrer to stir where needed. Read the label to determine room number. Find the room number on sticky labels made yesterday. Place label on top of cup for delivery to use. Place in tray. Put a straw with all cold drinks.

Drink Delivery
When an order is up in the tray, pick up a drink, read the room number on the sticky note at the top, and find the number on the Planning Form made yesterday. Read the form to determine method of payment. Use a map of BHP or listen to directions of how to get to the room number. Go to the room, knock, tell teacher payment (need to punch their card, or get $2), obtain payment, and tell the teacher thank you for their business. Come back to shop for next delivery. Give cash to Mrs. White.

Clean Stations
When deliveries are complete, students are expected to clean their station. This includes throwing trash away, wiping down surfaces, and putting items back in the cabinet or refrigerator.
