THE "NEW RIGHT" IN THE BRAZILIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS

COORDINATOR: Vanuccio Pimentel

ABOUT

The 2018 elections consolidated a new moment of the New Republic with the rise of the so-called "new right" in the National Congress. The movement began with the street demonstrations of 2013 and materialized in Congress with the 2018 elections and the victory of Jair Bolsonaro.

Throughout this period there was the consolidation of groups with profiles of conservative character, especially military and religious, as the main basis of defense to act in favor of the government of Jair Bolsonaro. The 2022 electoral process consolidated this trend and strengthened their positions in Congress in the trail of changes in electoral rules that ended the proportional coalitions.

Thus, understanding the new configuration of the National Congress will allow us to trace the scenarios of changes and permanence in the country's political game, as well as analyze the behavior of parliamentarians through the spatial distribution of votes in each district.
