Concert Success!
The Silver, Gold and Platinum Bands did a fabulous job performing at their year-end concert on Wednesday!
The stepped up, focused and pplayed challenging music at a very high level.
The Silver Band played band pieces for the first time - music involving many separate parts happening simultaneously, shading in dynamic contrast, new notes and demanding rhythms. Well done!
The Gold Band played much more advanced music - many new notes and rhythms, and even quite a few new instruments! We went further than notes and rhythms; trying to create various emotional reactions in our audience. Bravo!
The Platinum Band played much more advanced music in many different styles, from a stately British March, to an Elton John movie tune, to a rollicking Pirate theme - they were able to quickly adjust to the different demands of all these styles and deliver a solid performance. "Elegant" was the way one of our Grade 6 musicians described it!

... is due on Saturday May 13th or ALL band students. Regular home practice will ensure that this is the best assignment your child can submit.
At ASB we endeavour to give all our students the opportunity to find a passion that excites them, that may be something they do for the rest of their lives or that may inspire them to consider a specific program at university or even a career. Or this passion may help round them out as a person and assist them in being stronger academically and prepare them more fully for life at university and beyond.
At ASB we hire teachers from all over the world. We work hard to find well-rounded teachers as they are great role models for our students. We are blessed to have a number of teachers who have a passion for music and the arts. In fact, six of them, along with the spouses of two other staff members, will be performing at the Dilmun Club this coming Friday, May 5.
The Jazz Orchestra of Bahrain was founded and is conducted by our very own ASB band conductor, Mr. Scott Rogal. He is joined by musicians/teachers Ms. Eva (gr 2), Mr. Tamas (gr 3), Ms. Suim (PE), Ms. Melissa (EAL), Ms. Alicia (Music), Mr. Gareth (Spouse of Ms. Berenice) and Mr. Soren (Spouse of Ms. Annika). If you have time Friday evening please come out to see these wonderful musicians doing what they love to do.
“Students who view their success as a result of hard work will persevere through challenges, while students who believe their success lies with some innate ability—like “talent”—are more likely to give up.”

Guide to Band Class during Ramadan:
According to Mr. Fuad, the Head of our Arabic Department, playing an instrument during band class is acceptable practice during Ramadan.
If, however, a student is physically unable to play (exhaustion, hunger, thirst), then the student will do a pen & pencil activity that will be handed in and marked at the end of class.

Playing an instrument makes you smarter
Einstein once said: “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music... I get most joy in life out of music”. And as it turns out, Einstein was onto something: many studies show a correlation between musical training and academic success, in both children and adults. Learning to play an instrument stimulates the brain, improving functions like memory and abstract reasoning skills, which are essential for maths and science.
Practising a musical instrument improves “grit” and patience
It’s an important lesson to learn that the more effort you put into something, the better the result will be. A pretty important life lesson.
Playing music is fun!
We can harp on about all the scientifically accurate benefits to learning a musical instrument – but what matters most is that it’s enjoyable for the player. While other hobbies like watching TV or flicking through social media are passive, playing music actively engages and stimulates the brain, making you feel happy and occupied.

Practicing at Home
Home practice makes a huge difference in student achievement in music.
20 minutes, twice a week, is all it takes. A music stand can be super helpful!
Focused practice, alone in a room, does not come naturally to young musicians. They need your help.
Set a schedule
This is schoolwork, and should be done before playtime
Remove distractions - not in a room with their electronic devices
Be encouraging - compliment them on how much they’ve improved

Welcome to Band!
Welcome advanced and beginning students - we're going to have lots of fun and experience music making firsthand. We're lucky that all students get a chance to try an instrument!!
The most successful musicians practice regularly (2 or 3 times a week for 20 minutes) at home; please setup a regular practice routine for your child.
We’re excited to get the classes started, and begin some exciting after school opportunities, like the after school Platinum Band!! The school's top performing ensemble will have their first rehearsal on Tuesday, September 19th, and will be playing at the Avenues Mall as well as the Bahrain Jazz Festival in front of 5000 music lovers.
We'll also have the Beginner/Mentor ECA starting soon; this is a great chance to get some practicing in and to get extra help from a more advanced musician.
