Week of May 27, 2023
Finals coming next week!
This was the last week before final exams and our students have been busy with turning in important assignments, studying, and preparing for next week. We encourage all parents to remind their students and support their students to eat well, get lot's of sleep, and stay organised and refreshed for next week's final exams!
Kindness- We have been working very hard to help our students to show a bit more kindness to each other. We are seeing a large amount of students who are saying unkind things to each other either by joking or not. Please remind your child the importance of saying kind things to their peers either in person or by cyber communications.
Need to see Ms. Shawndra? To see the counselor, you must have a pass from your teacher or a pass from the counselor. During this last month of school, it is vital that all students are on task and in class. Email me at Sbird@asb.bh and I will send a pass for you to see me. Let’s finish strong and stay on task!

Emotions have started running high this week as student are feeling the pressure of the upcoming exams. A reminder to all students ( and their parents!), that exams are just a normal part of your learning journey and only form a piece of the puzzle. They are a great opportunity for you to take a moment to see how far you have come over the course of this year, how much you have learned and to show off your learning. It will naturally highlight some areas that need to be reviewed further and that's exactly what they are there for, to show you and your teachers where there may be misunderstandings or gaps in your knowledge. Embrace them, try and enjoy them and remember, you will learn better and perform better on any exam with plenty of sleep. Try and get to sleep by 10pm for a 6am wake-up. It will make a tremendous difference!
With your review, be sure to approach your teachers with specific questions and do little and often revision. A study timetable can also be very helpful. If you're not sure how to do one, ask any teachers or Ms Shawndra and Ms Natalie - we are all here to help and support you!
UNIVERSITIES
Gr 11, please ensure you are using Unifrog to its full capacity. Add all your activities and achievements into the locker and your profile. This is particularly important for US applicants as Ms Shawndra will be working on your references over the summer and will need all this information. Any student who is interested in attending a University in the U.S. should have signed up for the SAT exam by now (Even if you believe that your school is not requiring the SAT).
MIDDLE SCHOOL
With the excitement of summer break to come, we are seeing an increase in behaviours that are not conducive to the learning environment. Parents, please have a talk with your students about appropriate behaviours in class, kindness with social media, and overall studious behaviors.

Cyber Security!
Here are some helpful tips for our 6th-11th graders to help them make good choices with social media and "Hatif" etiquette. (Cell Phone). Share these 4 tips with your students!
Anything published online remains there for a very long time (potentially forever). The Internet never "forgets" or loses something because there are all kinds of backups and duplications happening online (and, of course, someone might download something from the Internet onto their own computer). This means that even if you post something in one place, it might end up elsewhere, used by other portals that aggregate information. Once something is online, you lose control over what happens to it; for example, you might see pictures you shared tagged and reshared multiple times by other people. The more exciting the picture, the more attention it gets; celebrity images and stories are a good example of how quickly things can be shared worldwide (the selfie taken at the 2014 Oscars by a handful of celebrities was retweeted over 779,000 times in an hour).
Always read posts twice before clicking send. The smallest typos can make a huge difference to the meaning (yes, some of those auto-correct errors pictures are real!). How confident do you feel about something that you wrote popping up on a friend’s (or a stranger's) screen? If you think the recipient of the message would enjoy it, send it; otherwise don't.
If you are sending someone a message, would you tell him/her the same thing face-to-face as well?Somehow it is easier to attack someone from behind a text or email and this is how cyber-bullying starts. If you wouldn’t say it directly to a person then don’t write it.
You might not appreciate the same humour as your recipient and what you find funny others might find outrageous, disturbing or offensive. If you want to make a joke about someone, think about how they might react before you send.

We had our first ASB university fair this week. It was very successful and students from grade 10 &11 were engaged and asking plenty of questions. The exhibitors made a point of commenting on how lovely and proactive all the students they spoke to were. Grade 11 students should continue working on their research and narrowing down choices of countries for further study and career options.

Middle School and High School-
Would you like to be a more effective communicator? Try this 5S approach in this short 8 minute Video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntYJFVCTwas
1. Slow down- when you speak (makes you seem less nervous).
2. Start- start the conversation. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the other person. People love talking about themselves after all!
3. Search- Search out information if you hear someone speaking about something that you don't know.
4. Seek-Seek out opportunities to practice speaking! At school- offer to answer a question that your teacher asks, offer to say a toast when your family is having a meal together, do something courageous with a school club.
5. Silence- Listen in silence to reflect on what the other person says.
Week of January 15th, 2023
A reminder that we have our first university fair, on Sunday 22nd January, in School. This is for students only and we ask that you please encourage your son/daughter to come with questions for those representatives. Even if they are not interested in that specific university, they can gain a great insight into life at university in general and expectations.
Exam Week and Self Care!
During exam weeks, we are often filled with anxiety, feelings of being overwhelmed, and overall stress. This week... for our School Counseling Lessons, we worked on our mental health and self care. During exam week, all we can do is remember that what we have learned, is what we know. We should eat well, sleep well, and fill our brains with positivity and calmness. When we have anxiety, we can take a step back, breath, listen to calming music, and write down the things that we are thankful for each day.
For this week, we worked on the following 3 activities to have a wonderful, positive, and stress free week!
1. Listen to calming music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngyraivSH0
2. Write down the positives for this week:
(Examples- the weather is better!, We won't have as much homework because of exam week, this is an opportunity to show what I know, this is self care week!).
3. Breathing exercises: Breathing exercises can reduce stress by increasing oxygen exchange, which reduces your blood pressure, slows the heart, and releases any tension held in the abdomen. These physical changes also benefit your mental state - concentrating on your breath can bring you into the present, in a state of mindfulness
Start by getting comfortable. Loosen any restrictive clothing, and find a position that is comfortable for you - this may be sitting down, laying down, or if that’s not possible, standing up.
In your comfortable position, rest your feet on the floor, and place one hand on your chest, and the other hand on your belly.Through your nose, let your breath flow deep down into your abdomen, feeling your belly expand into the hand above it. The hand above your chest wants to remain as still as possible.Breathe out through pursed lips, slow and steady.Repeat steps 3 and 4, concentrating on your technique and timing, taking slower and deeper breaths than your regular breathing pattern, in and out.
Continue for 3-5 minutes, or until you feel calmer.
ADD A COUNTING PATTERN TO YOUR DEEP BREATHING Once you have gotten used to breathing deeply using your diaphragm, you might try adding a counting pattern to help focus the mind and down-regulate your physical stress response. Remember to go at your own pace, especially if you are new to conscious breathing and/or are working with cardio-respiratory conditions.
Count to 4 on each inhale, hold the breath for 1 count, and exhale for 7 counts. The brief breath hold helps to strengthen your breathing muscles, while the long exhale relative to inhale is particularly effective for combating stress and anxiety.

How to teach your child organization skills
When kids go to middle school, they have more homework than when they were younger. Their social calendars also get busier. To manage these demands, they need to learn organizational skills and how to prioritize time.
1. Teach how to divide and conquer.
Goal: Keep deadlines for long-term projects from creeping up.
Example: Using a calendar, show your child how doing a little work each day can help get projects done.
Goal: Have less stress when there’s lots to do.
Example: Tasks and chores can be organized by due date—or by time needed or by how hard (or easy) they are. Just putting a list in order can help your child feel more in control.
Goal: Have everything your child needs for school at the door.
Example: Designate a place for items your child needs to remember for school: backpack, projects, gym clothes—or an eraser!
Goal: Prioritize chores and messages by color.
Example: Your child might use red sticky notes for important tasks and green ones for things that have to be done by the end of the week.
Goal: Make things easier to visualize.
Example: With a big whiteboard, your child can make to-do lists, map out thoughts for an assignment, or just write down things to remember.
Goal: Get rid of clutter and save important items.
Example: Clearing out old papers, leftover snacks, and pencil stubs once a week can make it easier for your child to find things.
Goal: Help your child plan better.
Example: Have your child write down start and end times for chores or homework for a couple weeks. This can help your child figure out how to budget time in the future.

Social Emotional School Counseling:
Each week, we offer to our teachers 10 minute lessons or shorter that will coincide with the standards of the American School Counselor Association. The topics will vary greatly each week.
This week, we shared a Ted talk with our students regarding bullying. It just takes ONE student to sit with someone at lunch, or stand up to someone being unkind to another. Let's help our students to feel brave and stick up for each other. We want this school to be the most inclusive school on the Island!
Enjoy this Ted Talk! This lesson is appropriate for grades 6-12.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh7XFCysTr4--
Follow up questions for group discussion:
What are some ways that students may experience bullying in school?
-Examples: Someone saying something unkind in a group chat, Not including others at lunch or the playground, creating groups where others are not invited, saying mean things about a student to another.
How are some ways that we can individually help in a situation?
-Examples: Sharing in the group chat that the unkind things said, should not be said- sticking up for the person "Hey, I'm not comfortable talking bad about X". Inviting someone to sit at your table.
Standards Met:
PS:A1.6 Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior

Middle School:
We are working with our middle school students and their interpersonal relationships. Many of you already know that it is typical for students in grades 6, 7, and sometimes 8th grades to struggle with emotions, friendships, and feeling secure in their middle school friend-groups. Ms. Shawndra and the middle school teachers are working with students to be able to have a strong sense of emotional intelligence and to be able to not only feel good in middle school, but to have exemplary behaviour towards their colleagues.
We have noticed that our students missed two years of social skills during the pandemic and this has an impact on social skills. Ms. Shawndra is working each day with assisting our students to navigate through the middle school years. Your children are precious and deserve happiness each day! With one of our pillars of happiness, it is a top priority to assist our students in finding their place in the ASB family.
High School:
Grades and High School transcripts: As we are getting an opportunity to review our progress reports and grades, remember that your grades will be added to your GPA and will be needed for your university applications.
Remember to watch your grades, do well on your exams, and if you miss an assignment- work with your teacher to turn it in. Keep those grades UP.
Universities:
Please encourage your son/daughter to keep using Unifrog to research any interests and countries where they may wish to study. We will be sharing a 'parents code' so that parents can open their own accounts and use it as a research tool as well.
SAT: Any 11th grade student who is interested in attending a university in the U.S.

MOOCS and Supercurriculum
With more prospective students than ever, many universities are looking for that extra special 'something' that a student can demonstrate. Admissions officers will be asking themselves "Is this candidate the right fit for our institution/course?". MOOCS and supercurriculum are playing more and more of a role in these decisions. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) is a model for delivering learning content online to any person who wants to take a course, with no limit on attendance. Simply, these are online courses that are either free or cost minimally for a certificate. They, along with extra reading, documentaries, podcasts, Ted talks etc are a fantastic way to access the 'supercurriculum' and demonstrate a passion for their subject. Please ask your son/daughter to show you and tell you about how they are accessing the supercurriculum and encourage them to record it in Unifrog.

Mental Health at ASB:
I came across this across this article today on 'The guardian' website. Though UK centric, it convey a very important message regarding nature projects and the link to improved mental health in young people. With the improving weather in Bahrain, this is a great time to get some seeds into pots and grow them on the windowsills and then transfer them to a garden or larger pot outside or on a balcony. This is something that the whole family can get involved in and just a great project that is away from a screen and gives our young people an opportunity to reconnect with nature, even on the smallest of scales. I couldn't write this without mentioning my fantastic gardening club gang who are growing a variety of plants in my Biology lab and hopefully will be able to plant them outside for all to enjoy soon. Happy growing!

Mental Health at ASB:
Promoting Mental Wellbeing for Students
Emotional development should be a core feature of a school’s curriculum
The need for mental health awareness has risen dramatically in schools, worldwide, since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic. School counselors now more than ever need to educate and support their students as they navigate through some post pandemic challenges.
As a result of the sudden change in the world around them, some students have understandably experienced a decline in social skills, communication, and resiliency skills. However, educators everywhere believe that returning to a regular lifestyle can make a positive impact on the students as they return to their normal activities. Gulf Insider spoke to the team at American School of Bahrain (ASB), to see how they are helping students prosper emotionally as well.
“Happy students are much more likely to be successful in everything they do at a school. This applies to students from Pre-Kindergarten through to High School graduation.” Dave McMaster, Founding Director of ASB. Therefore, ASB has proactively embraced the emotional and social aspect of learning as a main component of their educational philosophy and school pillars. Counselors at ASB have a significant responsibility to support and reinforce mental wellbeing and ensure a positive learning environment in the school. An individual's mental health determines their ability to deal with life's challenges, recognize their skills, learn and function effectively, and give back to their community. Hence mental health and emotional development of the students at ASB are taken very seriously.
The school has three school counselors who provide support for Elementary, Middle, and High School students. Their goal is to work closely with each student so that their academic, post secondary, and social/emotional needs are met. It is evident that when students display strong emotional intelligence and mental health, they will be able to tackle the educational opportunities and realise the full potential of their abilities.
The counselors at ASB actively help students by teaching them how to regulate their emotions, improve their organizational strategies, assist with conflict resolution and help students establish healthy relationships with their classmates. In addition to that, counselors teach resilience strategies and empathy skills and encourage students to have a high level of self-awareness.
New ASB students are provided with one-on-one meetings with their counselors in the first quarter after joining the school to monitor how they are settling in, socially and academically. The school aims to contact the parents of these students to hear their feedback as well. The school also makes sure that Counselors visit the classrooms and teach students about important topics such as cyber safety, social strategies and tools, and advise them on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“Students who receive positive mental support from their school and families tend to be eager to participate in school events and extracurricular activities. They tend to be more interested in their studies, are able to retain information better, and show healthy resiliency skills and interpersonal relationships”, shared the ASB School Counseling team.
Mental health education at ASB starts in the early years to provide the best growth and development opportunities for the students. Children make their first friendships at this age, while teenagers are developing their sense of self-worth, self-esteem and independence. Youth must overcome a variety of obstacles as they grow up, such as exclusion, bullying, conflict, and low self-esteem. The school recognizes these issues and gives students the resources they need to handle them. Students' mental health can be significantly improved with the help of mental health specialists, parents, and teachers; paving the way for a healthier and happier future.
ASB counselors are focused on ensuring that all of our students are feeling a sense of wellbeing and comfort in their learning environment. With 45 student nationalities represented at the American School of Bahrain, students from various backgrounds and countries are offered ample support as they adjust to their new culture and environment. The importance of mental health education in schools cannot be overstated since it has a beneficial effect on the lives of our children.

Sleep
We have noticed a trend in High School students of significantly reducing the number of hours of sleep they get, during the week and weekend. Please, encourage your young people to work on their sleep patterns and rituals before bedtime. They should not be staying up until the little hours of the morning working on 'that project'. This will affect their ability to focus in school as well as affect their emotional wellbeing and decision making processes.
Here is a great article from the guardian about the importance of sleep but also how to realistically tackle 'getting to sleep'.
