I am a Business, Economics & Math teacher with a BSc in both subjects as well as a MSc in Finance and a PGCE from the University of Nottingham. I have over 6 years of teaching experience in both Business and Economics from GCSEs through to A levels and AP and 3 years of teaching experience in middle school Math. In my free time, I enjoy trading FOREX and developing models for binary options. In addition I enjoy going to the gym and reading subject related books that I encourage students to read.
Week of June 18th
Grade 7B Math: Students are revisiting algebra in the sense that they are solving algebraic equations. but in the context of linear equations. Students had to create y values based on a range of x values and plot the values on a graph.
Week of June 11th
Grade 7B Math: Students are working on animated videos to showcase on any of the math topics they have learnt during the course of the academic year.
Week of May 28th
Grade 7B Math: Students are continuing with revision. The main focus has been on dependent and independent probability as well as calculations involving variability, more specifically mean absolute deviation and interquartile range. Students also reviewed geometry and basic algebra.
Week of May 21st
Grade 7B Math: Students are currently revising for their end of term exam. At the moment we have covered variability in data sets and basic probability calculations. Students who have mastered this are continuing to work on a group project related to standard deviation. To mix up the content a little bit, students have been given (as an extension) SAT style questions that require grade 7 level math. This reinforces some of the topics touched on earlier in the year.
Week of May 14th
Grade 7B Math: Students completed their unit on probability last week, so the focus of this week was to revise and consolidate the topics in the probability exam which took place on Wednesday. Students have been informed of the topics that will be part of the end of term exam and a full 'revision sheet' with worked examples was provided for students to go through in order to be prepared for the upcoming exams.
Week of May 7th
Grade 7B Math: Students are continuing with work on dependent and independent probability and are also working on probability models and simulations.
Week of April 30th
Grade 7B Math: Students completed working on ratios and began looking at probability. To help them understand conceptually, they played 'over the hill' using a set of dice and looked at the uses of probability in their lives. Students calculated the theoretical probability and compared it to the theoretical probability.
Week of April 16th
Grade 7B Math: Students have started looking at the topic of probability and how to calculate simple probability and its complement. In addition, the students have created tree diagrams to represent the sample space of all possible outcomes.
Week of April 10th
Grade 7B Math: Students are currently revising the statistics unit and completing their end of unit summative tasks, while beginning their new topic of probability.
Week of March 26th
Grade 7B Math: This week students continued working on inferences with data and revisiting variability in data, including but not limited to mean absolute deviation and interquartile range. Students who were previously working on the Pearson's correlation coefficent were given time to to work on different sets of data in addition to starting a project on standard deviation
Week of March 19th
Grade 7B Math: Students are still using the tools they learned prior to experience week. This has meant comparing different sets of data while slipping in questions about validity and drawing conclusions. Students who have excelled have been given the chance to work on calculating the Pearson's correlation coefficient, with some students calculating by hand while others are using functions in excel to simplify the process.
Week of March 5th
Grade 7B Math: Students are now comparing data sets to make comparisons. The topics involved the average temperature of a country each month over the course of the year for two different countries. Based off of this datas, students had to calculate the mean, quartiles, mean absolute deviation and interquartile range to contrast and compare variability and central tendencies in the data
Week of February 26th
Grade 7B Math: Students are studying how to make inferences based on samples of data and have continued looking at variability in data, which includes and is not limited to the mean absolute deviation.
Week of February 19th
Grade 7B Math: Students are looking at the differences between a sample and a population and how to make inferences based on the samples. The week began with students counting the number of skittles that are of a particular color, and then we compared the numbers and worked on central tendencies. Students also looked at how to create scatter plots and compare data sets.
Week of February 5th
Grade 7B Math: Students have started looking at central tendencies in data sets, collecting data, organising it and analysing it using bar charts, pie charts and line graphs. This has included looking at the mode, mean, median, range and as an extension looking at the implementation of statistical analysis through functions on excel.
Week of January 29th
Grade 7B Math: This week, the focus has been on solving questions that link cardinal points on a compass to angles in addition to working out lines of symmetry while also determining the degree of rotational symmetry.
Week of January 22nd
Grade 7B Math: This week, the focus has been on identifying regular polygons, working out the sum of angles inside a regualr polygon and working with nets of 3D objects. Students continue to calculate missing angles on a straight line and angles where lines meet to form a circle.
Week of January 15th
Grade 7B Math: This week, the focus has been on angles on a line and on intersecting lines, focusing on properties of angles including but not limited to alternate and corresponding angles. Students who are finding this content relatively easy are working on algebraic angles.
Week of January 8th
Grade 7B Math: This week was focused on revision for both the end of unit (algebra exam) and end of term exam. Students are working on but not limited to: factorising, simplifying algebraic terms, multiplication and division using exponents as well as fractions.
Week of January 2nd
Grade 7B Math: This week students categorized angles based on the size of angles e.g. acute, reflex angle etc. In addition students have been using protractors to measure the size of angles and determine the property of angles. As I am running and ECA on Sunday, Math after-school club will continue on Thursdays starting next week for any students wishing to join
Week of December 11th
Grade 7B Math: This week students worked on factorising and expanding of algebraic expressions which included alphabetical terms in exponent form. This was mainly a week for consolidating what we have worked on the last few weeks which included many game quizzes involving alebra. As I will be running an ECA for block 2 on Sundays after the winter break, there will have to a rescheduling of the after school Math sessions that does not clash with students' ECAs.
Week of December 4th
Grade 7B Math: This week students started solving linear equations as well as solving expressions through the method of substitution. By the end of this week students should be fairly strong in algebra in preparation for their eventual end of unit test.
Week of November 27th
Grade 7B Math: This week was the start of our 3rd unit, Algebra. We started with algebraic notations and collecting like terms. Students who were more capable were given algebraic shapes to solve and extra work on Dr frost math.
Week of November 20th
Grade 7B Math: Students spent the week revising and covering topics related to unit 2 of arithmetics in anticipation of the assessment for this unit taken place on Tuesday. Following the PTC, students will begin algebra in the upcoming week. The Sunday after school Math sessions are still taking place, with any student wishing to join being more than welcome to do so
Week of November 13th
Grade 7B Math: Students continued to focus on fractions, now extending the topic to converting between fractions, decimal numbers and percentages. Sunday after-school sessions are continuing which are completely voluntary but encouraged.
Week of November 6th
Grade 7B Math: This week students continued their work on fractions, more specifically the multiplication of fractions and operations involving mixed numbers. Students who were already familiar were given the opportunity to work in pairs or groups of three to work on extension activities on DrFrost and Mathletics. This included some challenging problems like converting recurring decimal numbers in to fractions. The Sunday afterschool voluntary Math session are proving useful for consolidating current topics on fractions but also the arithmetics we covered in unit 1. The noise levels were a little higher, but most if not all were due to discussions between students on how to solve problems.
Week of October 23th
Grade 7B Math: Students have started to look at fractions. At the moment we are evaluating fractions which has involved combined previous topics of BEDMAS and rounding decimal numbers. We have taken a more aesthetic approach using flip charts with diagrams and taking the students outside to illustrate fractions using chalk. We have also started using Dr. Frost math where I am continuing to support students with arithmetics and a Sunday after school Math session for those who are interested in developing their skills further
Week of October 16th
Grade 7B Math: Students had a combination of MAP testing and also revisited some of the concepts that they were tested on prior to the vacation. There are still some pre existing issues with decimal numbers as well as two digit multiplication. In addition, students have now started with fractions.
Week of October 2nd
Grade 7B Math: This week students started with the rules of BIDMAS. It was apparent that students were still confused about the order of operations especially when there are operations at the same level i.e. multiplication and division in the same question. The students who found the operations easier were given the task of following the rules, but applied to algebraic expressions.
Week of September 25th
Grade 7B Math: This week we continued with multiplication and division strategies and spent a little extra time on division as this seems to be the most challenging operation for students. Some students who are finding this easy have been given word problems to challenge themselves. This included a problem, where students were given the distance from the earth to the sun (rounded) and they were given the distance of the earth to the moon relative to the earth to the sun. Using this they had to find the actual distance in km of the earth to the moon. Students who are still struggling with basic division have been given extra courses at home, which included videos and practice questions together so that students can learn and practice at their own pace.
Week of September 18th
Grade 7B Math: The start of this week involved consolidating multiplying and dividing numbers, both whole and decimal by powers of ten as there were still clearly a few issues towards the end of the previous week in conducting these operations. We are continuing to integrate place values in our work, more towards the decimal place values. Moving forward, we continued with multi-digit addition and subtraction with word problems to begin our classes and challenge the students with their problem solving skills. Some students are having issues, which are being supported, while others worked on extension activities with addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.
