This is a brand new course for session 2026/2027. The course will be delivered with Home Economics.
Home Economics will cover Roast - this will see pupils complete the L5 Barista Award
Business & ICT will cover Retail - this will see pupils complete the L5 Skills for Work Retailing course.
Pupils going into S4 will be recommended for this course by their teacher. As there is a practical element to this course, spaces are limited. Entry will be at the discretion of staff.
Pupils going into S5/6 who wish to pick this subject up can gain entry by having a conversation with Mr McNiven.
There is no Level 6 course to progress to, but pupils will be able to study a range of other related qualification in the Business & ICT Faculty.

This unit introduces pupils to the different sectors of the retailing industry and allows them to explore the variety of job roles available and the importance and impact of these roles to the success of retail organisations. It will also allow pupils to explore roles and responsibilities relating to customer and non-customer facing duties.
Pupils will:
Investigate different sectors, job roles and career paths in the retail industry
Participate in interviews within a retail context
Demonstrate employability skills and attitudes in specified practical activities
Review and evaluate own employability skills
There are four outcomes to this unit. Pupils will be giving each outcome when their teacher feels that they are ready. Some of the assessments for this unit are practical, in the form of a individual and group interviews. Furthermore, peer-to-peer feedback is essential for elements of assessments.
This unit focuses on providing pupils with the opportunity to learn about the importance of maintaining adequate stock levels, storing stock carefully and safely and having stock replenished effectively. The unit also focuses on the supply chain and pupils will discover what is involved in getting stock from source to the retail environment.
Pupils will be able to:
Explain the importance of following health and safety procedures when handling stock
Explain how a supply chain works
Maintain adequate stock levels
There are three outcomes to this unit. Pupils will be giving each outcome when their teacher feels that they are ready. Assessments are all in the form of written responses.
The unit focuses on how to provide a high degree of customer satisfaction in a retail environment. Pupils will learn about customer needs, good communication skills, consumer law, selling to customers and dealing effectively with customer complaints.
Pupils will:
Investigate a range of products and/or services from a retailer
Establish and respond to customer needs in a retail environment
Explain how key areas of current consumer law affect retailers
Deal with a customer complaint in a retail environment
There are four outcomes to this unit. Pupils will be giving each outcome when their teacher feels that they are ready. Some of the assessments for this unit are practical, in the form of a role play activity. Furthermore, peer-to-peer feedback is essential for elements of assessments.
This unit is intended to provide pupils with the opportunity to develop transferable skills which are desirable to the retail industry along with many other customer focused industries. Pupils are required to plan and implement a retail event. They will also evaluate their own contribution to the event.
Pupils will:
Work as a member of a team to contribute to the production of a plan for a retail event
Work as a member of a team, contribute to the planned retail event
Review and evaluate own contribution to the retail event
There are three outcomes to this unit. The majority of the outcomes will be assessed through group working and the event that has been planned. In addition, pupils will complete a written log.
